EDGEWATER, MD - There's a new independent bookstore in Edgewater.

Wyrd opened its doors recently in the Main Street at South River Colony shopping center.

The shop sells new and used books. There are also gifts for sale. An on-site cafe serves tea and coffee.

The store plans to host book clubs. Interested participants can sign up here.

"Wyrd" is an old English word that's pronounced like "weird" or "word." It means fate or destiny.

Davidsonville resident AmyLea Murphy owns Wyrd.

"AmyLea fosters a love for books and community, aiming to create a gathering place for meaningful connections and shared experiences," Main Street at South River Colony said on Facebook.

The shop held a sneak peek on Oct. 28 and a soft opening on Oct. 31. The grand opening is on Dec. 2.

The store is located at 135 Mitchells Chance Road.

Its hours are:

  • Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
