ANNAPOLIS, MD — A 25-year-old Anne Arundel County man has been found criminally responsible in the 2021 stabbing death of his mother, according to prosecutors.
Judge Stacy W. McCormack found Andrew Beavers guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Juanita Koilpillai, Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess announced in a news release. Monday's verdict followed a week-long trial in Annapolis.
"(Beavers) had a history of assaulting his mother, and on this terrible day, it led to her loss of life," Leitess said. "It is unimaginable that a person could do this to their mother, and I am thankful he will be held accountable."
According to prosecutors, police were called to the 6300 block of Genoa Road in Tracy's Landing around 3:30 p.m. on July 25, 2021, after Koilpillai's boyfriend reported finding blood in her home.
While searching the home, police found blood in a bedroom leading outside. Officers followed the trail and found Koilpillai's body in a marshy area on the property covered in grass and other debris.
An autopsy determined Koilpillai was stabbed 38 times and had 65 defensive wounds on her body, prosecutors said.
The following day, police located Beavers and Koilpillai's missing car in Virginia. Authorities said he had a fresh cut on his hand that he couldn't explain.
Investigators later learned that DNA from blood found on the suspected murder weapon was from both Koilpillai and Beavers, prosecutors said. Beavers was arrested and charged with murder.
Beavers faces life in prison for the murder. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Nov. 30.
