After two rain delays, Westminster defeated South River 13-10 in the 4A/3A state lacrosse championship game.
It took two trips to UMBC and nearly 24 hours, but Westminster High School finally captured the 4A/3A state lacrosse title with a 13-10 victory over South River High School Thursday night. Last year’s state final rematch was originally scheduled to take place on Wednesday, but with 1:11 remaining in the first half and South River leading 8-7, play was suspended due to lightning. When the game resumed Thursday night, Westminster rallied to take control and completed its undefeated season with a 13-10 victory over the defending state champions. The Seahawks will face Westminster High School in the state championship game for the second year in a row.
When the South River boys lacrosse team steps on the field for the class 4A/3A state championship game on Wednesday, the Seahawks will be presented with an all too familiar scene. For the second year in a row, South River will play in the state final, and will face Westminster High School again. After defeating Howard High 15-6 on Saturday, South River once again finds itself in the state championship game. The Seahawks have stormed through postseason play—defeating its opponents by a combined 47 goals in four games. However, South River shouldn’t necessarily expect to steamroll Westminster. The South River Boys lacrosse team won the regional championship game on Wednesday with a 10-3 victory over Chesapeake High.
The South River High School boys lacrosse and baseball teams were both victorious in postseason play Wednesday night and will advance in their state tournaments. The South River girls lacrosse team’s season came to an end Wednesday night in the regional finals with a 14-13 loss to Broadneck High School. Boys Lacrosse With a 10-3 win over Chesapeake High School, the boys lacrosse team won the class 3A/4A east regional championship and is now one victory away from returning to the state final. The South River softball team fell to Broadneck on Monday night.
The South River boys and girls lacrosse teams, along with the baseball team all racked up postseason wins Monday night to advance in the state tournament. The softball team fell to Broadneck, 2-1, on Monday afternoon. Baseball The South River baseball team knocked off Chesapeake 7-0 in the second round of the class 4A state baseball tournament. The Seahawks amassed five runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Connor Cox racked up four RBI on two hits for South River, while Jake Gratz had huge at bats in each of his plate appearances. Cox doubled in the first and smoked a homer in the fifth. Gratz walked, had a perfect sacrifice bunt and then doubled in the fifth pushing across two backbreaking RBI for South River. The Seahawks defeated North Point 21-0 on Wednesday.
The South River boys lacrosse team stormed through the first round of postseason play with a 21-0 victory over North Point on Wednesday night in Edgewater. The defending state champion lacrosse team easily handled an inferior North Point and moves on to play county foe Broadneck High in the second round Friday night. South River defeated Broadneck 10-7 on March 21. The No. 6 Bruins knocked off No. 11 Severna Park on Wednesday night to advance to the second round. The brackets are set and the high school lacrosse postseason will begin on Wednesday. The South River boys lacrosse team earned a No. 3 seed and will host No. 14 North Point on Wednesday. The girls lacrosse team received a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. The boys lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 12-2 record and was undefeated in county play. The only teams ranked ahead of South River in the 4A-3A east bracket are Calvert County foes Northern and Huntingtown. South River High School’s Lavon Chaney led this year’s football squad to its first postseason since 2006. Chaney, who has committed to play football at Monmouth next year, led Anne Arundel County in rushing yards during football season and has now transferred his athletic talents to the lacrosse field. The defensive specialist was recently featured in The Washington Post after No. 6 South River easily handled county lacrosse rival Severna Park 10-5 on Tuesday night. The Seahawks remain unbeaten in Anne Arundel County play. Boys Lacrosse The boys lacrosse team easily handled Chesapeake High School 10-3 Tuesday night in Edgewater.
