Hannah Street, 18, hopes to learn more about nonprofits so she can continue her work with the disabled.
Recent South River High School graduate Hannah Street is happiest when she’s helping people. “I love to help people and see how what I do affects people in a positive way,” said the 18-year-old Crofton resident, who was recently chosen as one of Bank of America’s Student Leaders. In particular, Street enjoys working with people with disabilities, as evidenced by her role as a volunteer track and field coach for the Special Olympics and her role as president of Best Buddies, a non-profit that creates friendships, employment opportunities, and leadership development for people who are developmentally or intellectually disabled. The Charter Revision Commission delivered its final report Monday.
Whether Crofton stays in District 7 or is moved to District 4 is in the hands of the County Council now, after a committee completed its review this week. The Decennial Charter Revision Commission recently closed the book on its review of the Anne Arundel County Charter—the rules governing how the county operates. On Monday, the five-member committee issued its final report, including two options for redrawing county district lines—a simple redrawing of the border between Districts 1 and 4, which would not affect Crofton, and another option which would move Crofton out of District 7 and into District 4. Parents say their South River student was ambushed as she arrived at school on Wednesday, then suspended by officials. Anne Arundel County Police and Public Schools released statements to Patch via email on the matter.
UPDATE from 12/16/11 at 3 p.m. Anne Arundel County Public Schools Spokesman Bob Mosier released the following statement to Patch via email: "The school’s administration, in conjunction with the School Resource Officer, addressed this situation quickly. This is an ongoing investigation and as such, I cannot comment on specifics. However, I will say that appropriate disciplinary action was taken against students found to be involved and in those cases, parents of students were involved in discussions with administrators." It would be a mistake if South Anne Arundel County had Crofton included in its boundary lines under this new proposed redistricting. South County and Crofton are very different in characteristics, for instance South County mostly rural, Agricultural and waterfront communities, marinas and boating, Crofton and its people are very nice but would better fit into another district more in character …   more ›
