Maryland General Assembly Notebook 2013

Miller Gets His Bust

A state senator wants a new state bird; one man's technolgical fortress is his castle; and the Senate president feels snubbed by Obama.

It's not a statue in front of the office building that bares his name but Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller did receive a bust of himself this week courtesy of the Regional Manufacturing Institute. Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, a Perry Hall Democrat, gave a sneak preview of the small, light-weight bust of Miller moments before presenting it to the Senate's top dog. "You can't have too much Mike Miller," Klausmeier said. The technology is similar to what was used in a scene of Jurassic Park 3 where a copy of a velociraptor's larynx was recreated. The institute offered legislators in Annapolis the opportunity to have themselves scanned into a computer and get busts of themselves. Miller seemed impressed with the petite bust but joked that it …

VIDEO: O's Fans Say 'We Knew We Would Be Here'

Two Orioles season ticket holders tell the tale of a 15-year wait.

Debbie Dwyer and Rosie Cassidy have been patiently waiting. When the Rockville residents purchased an Orioles season-ticket plan 15 years ago, they were making an investment in the future.  They knew someday it would pay off. Little did they know it would be 15 years. And little did they know in spring training that it would be this year. Patch caught up with Dwyer and Cassidy in their sweet seats before Game 2 of the American League Division Series. They normally sit on the first base side, so they were adjusting to their new digs, but you can see in the video how thrilled they were to be at Oriole Park at Camden Yards to experience the club's first playoff series since 1997. The Orioles and Yankees met in Game 3 Wednesday night. TELL US…

VIDEO: Edgewater Fans Take In Orioles Playoffs

Edye Stewart and her son, Brandon Davis, were at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Monday.

Brandon Davis decided he could do without some of his musical equipment. What he couldn't do without: experiencing an Orioles playoff game. So the 2002 South River grad hocked some of his personal items from his Miami residence in order to catch a flight and land a ticket to see the Orioles play in Game 2 of the American League Division Series Monday in Baltimore. Davis, 29, and his mother, Edye Stewart, sat about 10 rows off the field along the right field line as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-2. See the video for more from Stewart and Davis. Davis is retired from the military. Monday was his first game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards since the 1997 season. The Orioles carried a similar drought—15 straight seasons without a …

VIDEO: Playoff Baseball Rocks Camden Yards

Fans braved the chill for the Orioles' return to the postseason after a 15-year hiatus. They walked away disappointed after the O's lost 7-2 to the New York Yankees.

Playoff baseball returned to Oriole Park at Camden Yards Sunday night, and a sellout crowd did not let a little rain dampen the enthusiasm. After waiting out a two-and-a-half hour delay, fans settled in for the first postseason game in Baltimore since 1997.  The first game of the American League Division Series ended with a disappointing 7-2 loss to the New York Yankees.  Game Two of the ALDS is Monday at 8:37 p.m.

One Goal Down, One To Go For Orioles

The Orioles will host the Yankees Sunday and Monday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Nick Markakis stood perched, ready for takeoff atop the third base dugout railing Friday night in Texas . And when Nate McLouth made the game-ending catch in left field to clinch the American League Wildcard showdown for the Orioles, Markakis leapt with joy. Markakis was in a hoodie, sitting out with a broken thumb, watching from the top step of the dugout as the most visible cheerleader in the ballpark. Under his watch, the Orioles reached one goal Friday—earning a home postseason game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. That will happen on Sunday. But one goal remains, manager Buck Showalter said—staying active in the postseason long enough for Markakis, now a veteran leader in the clubhouse, to take part in the magical ride. Markakis' …

Orioles Fans Get First Crack At Tiebreaker Tickets

If the Orioles and Yankees meet in a tiebreaker Thursday, Orioles fans may rule the Yard.

The Orioles are preparing for a homefield advantage should a Game No. 163 be required. The Orioles and Yankees entered Monday tied for the American League East division lead. Both have clinched a playoff spot, but the division penant may come down to the season finale on Wednesday. If the clubs tie for the division crown, they'd meet Thursday in a one-game playoff at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The winner would advance to the American League Division Series, the loser would play in the one-game American League Wild Card Playoff on Friday. Tickets for that potential one-game tie-breaker go on sale to the public Tuesday afternoon, and the Orioles are limiting it to fans living in the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network broadcasting region. Orioles Clinch a Postseason Berth

The Orioles could win the American League East, but will at worst earn a wild card berth.

The Orioles clinched a playoff berth Sunday, meaning Baltimore will experience postseason baseball for the first time since 1997. With Sunday's win, the Orioles (92-67) swept Boston. That victory, combined with the Rangers evening win against the Angels, eliminated the Angles from postseason contention, assuring the Orioles of their first playoff appearance since winning the American League East in 1997. Texas lost Game 1 of a doubleheader Sunday, but rebounded to win the second game, 8-7, against a pesky Angels bunch. Texas clinched a playoff spot, as well, and maintains a lead over Oakland in the American League West. Oakland trails the Orioles in the wild card standings, but would be in the playoffs if the season ended Sunday.  Detroit …

Baysox Pitcher Dylan Bundy Called Up to Orioles

Dylan Bundy, 19, will be the youngest Orioles player to make a major league debut in more than 40 years.

Bowie Baysox right-handed pitcher Dylan Bundy was called up to the majors Wednesday morning, according to a Baltimore Orioles press release. Bundy made his Baysox debut in August after being called up from Class-A Frederick, and has spent the past several weeks impressing fans and media alike. Following his first minor league season he was named to the Baseball America Minor League All-Star Team and this year he finished his Double-A minor league regular season going 2-0 with a 2.24 ERA in three starts. At just 19 years old, Bundy will be the first Orioles player to make his major league debut before turning 20 since Mike Adamson in 1967, according to the release. Bundy will join 20-year-old infielder Manny Machado, who has been wowing …
