Police say a woman and a 14-year-old boy were both killed when their car struck a tree Friday night.

Two Davidsonville residents, including a teenager, were killed Friday night when their car stuck a tree on Patuxent River Road, according to Anne Arundel County Police. Carrie Lynn Desmond, 36, of Davidsonville, was killed when the Ford Focus she was driving crashed into a tree in the 3600 block of Patuxent River Road near West Central Avenue, police stated in a press release. A 14-year-old boy, of the same address, was also killed. Police responded to Patuxent River Road for the report of a single vehicle crash around 10:03 p.m. When officers arrived on scene they located a 2012 Ford Focus with two critically injured passengers inside, police said. Funeral Home Finalizes Details for Feeks' Memorial Tribute

Residents are encouraged to line Route 2 at 10 a.m. Monday to honor Edgewater Navy SEAL Patrick Feeks, as his body is escorted in to town.

After gaining approval from the Feeks family, the George. P. Kalas Funeral Home is moving forward with its special memorial tribute plan to honor Edgewater’s fallen Navy SEAL Patrick Feeks at 10 a.m. Monday. At about 10 a.m. Monday, residents are encouraged to line Solomons Island Road in Edgewater with flags “as their fallen hero comes home,” according to one funeral home employee. Feeks, a 28-year-old Navy SEAL, was killed Aug. 16 with seven other Americans and four Afghans when his helicopter crashed while fighting insurgents in Afghanistan. Hundreds are expected to attend Feeks’ viewing from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, but the funeral home’s staff members also are rallying the community to host a “welcome home tribute” for the “fallen …

First-Year Teachers Prepare for Life in the Classroom

Two young educators discuss their paths to South River and Southern high schools, and why teaching in Anne Arundel County is their "dream job."

In a job market where college graduates may struggle to find work, local teachers Zach Cohen and Libby Kozlowski admit they hit the jackpot. Both Cohen and Kozlowski are younger than 25, they both graduated in May and they both scored their “dream job”—teaching for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). At last week’s Board of Education meeting, AACPS’ Executive of Human Resources Florie Bozzella said qualified teachers were turning down AACPS jobs for positions in neighboring counties. But for Cohen and Kozlowski, Anne Arundel County puts them both exactly where they want to be. The New Guy at South River Cohen, a first-year tech ed teacher at South River High, moved from rural Pennsylvania with his fiancée to join the Seahawks’ …

Edgewater Market Takes 'Local' to New Heights

The new Restoration Foods recently opened its doors to the public and hopes to epitomize the essence of buying locally and growing locally.

When Sara Colhoun was just a child growing up on her parents’ farm in Harwood she had an insight that ultimately guided her path in life. She recognized that something was inherently misguided for her father to need to load the farm truck with asparagus, but then drive the produce elsewhere to sell it. “Even then, it was strange that we had to leave our community to sell food and that people had to leave their communities to buy food,” Colhoun said. “It just seemed off.” Colhoun, now 37, is a ninth generation farmer who initially started farming in the Pacific Northwest after a few years at St. Johns in Santa Fe, NM. She didn’t finish college there because food allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities interrupted her studies. But as …

WATCH: Young Students Eager to Learn, Ready for Class

Patch caught up with the Wagners amid their back-to-school preparations early Monday morning.

Nearly 10,000 children throughout Edgewater, Davidsonville and south county headed off to classrooms for the first day of the 2012-13 school year Monday morning.  For Robbie and Bella Wagner, two students headed to Davidsonville Elementary, the first day of school brings excitement, smiles and an eagerness to learn. Robbie, 6, and Bella, 9, are both headed to a new school this year due to Anne Arundel County Public Schools' (AACPS) redistricting, sending the brother-sister duo from Central Elementary to Davidsonville Elementary. At first, Bella said she was nervous about the switch, but because she knows everyone in her class, it doesn't bother her. Their mother, Christine Wagner, said she wasn't a huge fan of the redistricting at first, …
