2 Area Middle Schoolers To Compete in County Spelling Bee

The winner of the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee will compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Thirty-two area students, including two from area middle schools, will prepare to show off their spelling skills at the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on Feb. 23. Eighteen public school students, 13 private school students, and one home-schooled student will compete to become the county champion, according to a news release. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 28-30. Shane Jackson, a seventh-grader at Central Middle School, and Melinda Cutler, an eighth-grader at Southern Middle School, will both compete on Feb. 23. 28 Students Set for County Spelling Bee

Five of the competitors are returning school champions, according to school officials.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ best fifth- to eighth-grade spellers are set to compete Feb. 25 for a trip to the national championship in Washington, DC. The 24th annual county spelling bee is set to feature 28 students, including five returning school champions. The competition is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Board Room at the Parham Building, according to a release from the school system.
