South River Baseball, Boys Lacrosse Capture Wins in Postseason Play

The South River Boys lacrosse team won the regional championship game on Wednesday with a 10-3 victory over Chesapeake High.

The South River High School boys lacrosse and baseball teams were both victorious in postseason play Wednesday night and will advance in their state tournaments. The South River girls lacrosse team’s season came to an end Wednesday night in the regional finals with a 14-13 loss to Broadneck High School. Boys Lacrosse With a 10-3 win over Chesapeake High School, the boys lacrosse team won the class 3A/4A east regional championship and is now one victory away from returning to the state final. The Seahawks will now face Howard High School in the state semifinals at Annapolis High School on Saturday.  Matt Gaskins and Brandon Senft led South River to the 10-3 victory with three goals each, according to The Baltimore Sun. South River Lacrosse, Baseball Advance in Postseason Play

The South River softball team fell to Broadneck on Monday night.

The South River boys and girls lacrosse teams, along with the baseball team all racked up postseason wins Monday night to advance in the state tournament. The softball team fell to Broadneck, 2-1, on Monday afternoon. Baseball The South River baseball team knocked off Chesapeake 7-0 in the second round of the class 4A state baseball tournament. The Seahawks amassed five runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Connor Cox racked up four RBI on two hits for South River, while Jake Gratz had huge at bats in each of his plate appearances. Cox doubled in the first and smoked a homer in the fifth. Gratz walked, had a perfect sacrifice bunt and then doubled in the fifth pushing across two backbreaking RBI for South River. Girls Basketball: Seahawks Set for North Point Rematch

The South River girls basketball team defeated Leonardtown Wednesday night.

The South River girls basketball team topped Leonardtown 46-26 Wednesday night to set up a region final against North Point for the third year in a row. The No. 2 Seahwaks will battle No. 1 North Point on Friday evening in a scene that is all too familiar to the team. "We lost to North Point in regional final the last two years," South River coach Mike Zivic said. The Seahawks are coming off a successful season with a 22-3 record and a victory over Arundel in the county championship game. But a win over North Point still stands between the team and a berth into the regional championship game. Girls Basketball: Seahawks Preparing for Postseason Run

The South River High girls basketball earned a first round bye and a No. 2 seed in the MPSSAA tournament.

For the past two season the South River High girls basketball season has come to an end the same way—with a loss to North Point in the region finals. This year, the Seahawks (20-3) will look to avenge those loses—but to get there they will first have to tackle some county opponents. South River is fresh off a victory over Arundel in the county championship game and has earned a first round bye along with a No. 2 seed in the Class 4A girls basketball tournament. The team will face the winner of the Meade-Broadneck game on Monday in the second round of the tournament. South River High: Winter Sports Get Going

The basketball, wrestling and indoor track seasons are among those getting started in the coming days.

There was very little gap between the fall and winter sports seasons at local high schools.  Winter sports get going this week with scrimmages, and some regular season matchups are scheduled for next week.  Here's a look at what's happening at South River High. 4 Seahawk Teams Soar Into State Playoffs

The next 72 hours will be decisive for South River's volleyball, field hockey, football and girls soccer squads.

After a thrilling come-from-behind victory by its football team, and an even more dramatic extra-time penalty goal for its girls soccer team, South River High is soaring into the state playoff picture. With Seahawks’ field hockey, girls soccer, football and volleyball teams each competing in the coming days, it’s a great time to be a South River student. South River’s girls soccer team won the regional championship on election night, defeating Arundel High 3-2. But as many students have already Tweeted, there’s a lot more action to come. Hi Michele, it's a little confusing, but South River is actually playing Bowie High, but their playing AT Richard Montgomery High. South River's Athletic Director Dave Klingel explained it to me and showed me the Seahawks are playing Bowie.   more ›

Bulldogs, Seahawks Battle for South County Championship Trophy

The Southern Bulldogs host the South River Seahawks Friday night to see who will earn bragging rights for the next year.

Edgewater, Davidsonville and south county’s two beloved high school football teams face off Friday night to see who takes home the South County Championship trophy. Both teams will have history on their minds as the two squads play in the wake of last year’s one-point game, where the Bulldogs took home the trophy with a 25-24 victory. In 2012, the Southern Bulldogs got their season off to a slow start, falling to Meade High 35-0. In the first half, the Bulldogs kept the Mustangs to zero points, but the third and fourth quarters were a different story, as Meade scored 14 and 21 points respectively. The Bulldogs are set to play hosts to the Seahawks of South River, who crushed Chesapeake High 48-24 in their first county game of the season. …

Complete Rundown of South River Fall Sports Tryouts

Are you ready for the start of Seahawks action this fall?

The summer is winding down, and for athletes that means one thing—fall sports.  The start of the fall season is nearly upon us, with tryouts for South River Hich sports starting on Saturday. South River Athletics Director Dave Klingel said it's an exciting time for students in the area that's so dedicated to sports. "It's always exciting, going back to school and getting back into the flow of things. Our coaches are ecstatic about the kids coming back and the new kids stepping up," Klingel said.  Klingel said hundreds of athletes are expected to arrive at South River for tryouts. Seahawks Finish No. 1 in Harvest for the Hungry

The Seahawks finished first for the fifth year in a row, collecting more than 13,000 pounds of food and raising more than $46,000.

For the fifth year in a row, South River High finished as the No. 1 school in the state for the Maryland Food Bank’s Harvest for the Hungry collection drive. The Seahawks officially collected 13,719 pounds of food and $46,352.74—the most ever raised by a Maryland school. Harvest for the Hungry, a three-week fall collection drive that concludes before Thanksgiving, benefits residents in need across the state. The Maryland Food Bank officially congratulated South River in an email Wednesday and provided a recap of the school’s contributions over the past six years. 8:06 p.m.—It's over. South River wins the Class 4A/3A Maryland State Lacrosse Championship! 8:03 p.m.—The game is back on. Two minutes to glory...  8:02 p.m.—As if you needed a reminder, South River leads the game 10-8 with 2:33 left in the state championship. After falling 7-0 to start, the Seahawks are now just minutes away from their second state title in four years.  7:55 p.m.—Fans are telling me there will be a 10-minute warm-up time prior to continuing the game.  7:45 p.m.—@CarrollVarsity just reported on Twitter that officials are letting fans back into UMBC Stadium.
