The South River Boys lacrosse team won the regional championship game on Wednesday with a 10-3 victory over Chesapeake High.
The South River High School boys lacrosse and baseball teams were both victorious in postseason play Wednesday night and will advance in their state tournaments. The South River girls lacrosse team’s season came to an end Wednesday night in the regional finals with a 14-13 loss to Broadneck High School. Boys Lacrosse With a 10-3 win over Chesapeake High School, the boys lacrosse team won the class 3A/4A east regional championship and is now one victory away from returning to the state final. The Seahawks will now face Howard High School in the state semifinals at Annapolis High School on Saturday. The South River softball team fell to Broadneck on Monday night.
The South River boys and girls lacrosse teams, along with the baseball team all racked up postseason wins Monday night to advance in the state tournament. The softball team fell to Broadneck, 2-1, on Monday afternoon. Baseball The South River baseball team knocked off Chesapeake 7-0 in the second round of the class 4A state baseball tournament. The Seahawks amassed five runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Connor Cox racked up four RBI on two hits for South River, while Jake Gratz had huge at bats in each of his plate appearances. Cox doubled in the first and smoked a homer in the fifth. Gratz walked, had a perfect sacrifice bunt and then doubled in the fifth pushing across two backbreaking RBI for South River. The South River baseball team received a first-round bye.
The brackets have been set for baseball and softball postseason play and the South River baseball team earned a first-round bye. The Seahawks received a No. 4 seed in the east region of the Class 4A state baseball playoffs and a bye for Friday’s first-round game. South River will host the winner of the Great Mills Chesapeake game on Monday. The South River baseball team split with Chesapeake during the regular season. On March 28, the Seahawks defeated Chesapeake 1-0, but South River fell to the Cougars 3-1 on April 17. South River finished the regular season with a 15-5 record. The 2013 rankings came out Monday with four Anne Arundel County schools in the top 2,000.

Broadneck High School is the highest county school on the list, ranking 722, and Arundel High School came in at 840. A fourth county school was ranked among the top 2,000: Annapolis High School was ranked at 1,843. Earlier this year, South River High received the highest marks of any Anne Arundel County School in a Washington Post ranking of schools across the country. In its ranking of schools in Maryland, South River ranked seventh. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools, with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. South River High School hosted a cut-a-thon with Hair Cuttery to raise funds for a student who has Hodgkin's lymphoma.
South River High School raised $2,000 for a student who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at a cut-a-thon on Thursday. The school partnered with Hair Cuttery and stylists cut hair at the school Thursday evening for $10 a cut. The money then went to the student, who asked only to be referred to as Candice. South River family and consumer sciences teacher Amy Szanyi said more than 100 people showed up for haircuts, including students and community members. Szanyi said the entire girls and boys lacrosse team at South River showed up for a cut. Between the cost of the haircut and T-Shirt sales, Szanyi said they raised about $2,000. It has been a good week for local teachers. Anne Arundel County recently named two area educators with the top honor of Teacher of the Year. South River High School Spanish teacher Jodie Hogan was named the 2012-2013 Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) Teacher of the Year. And Summit School’s Debora Coates Consugar won the honor of Private Schools Teacher of the Year at the Excellence in Education Awards on Monday night. South River High School’s Lavon Chaney led this year’s football squad to its first postseason since 2006. Chaney, who has committed to play football at Monmouth next year, led Anne Arundel County in rushing yards during football season and has now transferred his athletic talents to the lacrosse field. The defensive specialist was recently featured in The Washington Post after No. 6 South River easily handled county lacrosse rival Severna Park 10-5 on Tuesday night. The Seahawks remain unbeaten in Anne Arundel County play. The Washington Post article highlighted that while Chaney may do a lot of scoring during the football season—18 touchdowns his senior year—when it comes to lacrosse he prefers to be on the defensive side of the field. …
