South River, Southern Students Set for Solo 'Plunge'

Local students from South River and Southern high schools will plunge alone on Feb. 1 due to a conflict with exam schedules.

Anne Arundel County Public School students will have their own day to plunge in this year's Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge. All other participating schools in Maryland will plunge on Jan. 25 but, due to exams, Anne Arundel County students' day in the water was rescheduled—they will plunge on Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m. Last year, South River High's "Snowhawks" finished second in the entire state when it came to donations for the event. The local kids were only outdone by students at Arundel High.  According to team leaders at South River High, the school has raised approximately $9,000 for this year's plunge, involving more than 300 students. Local Schools Set Sights on 2013 Polar Bear Plunge

The 17th annual plunge where participants run into the chilly Chesapeake Bay will take place on Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park.

South River and Southern high's vibrant, community-focused student bodies have their sights on Jan. 26, as both schools prepare to raise money for the upcoming Polar Bear Plunge.  Before you know it, the big event will be here. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday for participating schools will take place the day before the Plungefest. To participate in the plunge, you must collect a minimum of $50 in pledges—and if you're younger than 18, you must have a parent or guardian's written consent. My Daughter took the plunge last year, and I believe she is going to repeat it this year. For a student to participate, all he/she needs is a minimum of 50.00 dollars...IF one of the kids ask for your support, please try to help, money goes to a great cause! South River may come in first this year, but, not keeping track of that...think it's great that students do this in freezing weather no less…   more ›
