The senior athlete was recently featured in The Washington Post.
South River High School’s Lavon Chaney led this year’s football squad to its first postseason since 2006. Chaney, who has committed to play football at Monmouth next year, led Anne Arundel County in rushing yards during football season and has now transferred his athletic talents to the lacrosse field. The defensive specialist was recently featured in The Washington Post after No. 6 South River easily handled county lacrosse rival Severna Park 10-5 on Tuesday night. The Seahawks remain unbeaten in Anne Arundel County play. The Washington Post article highlighted that while Chaney may do a lot of scoring during the football season—18 touchdowns his senior year—when it comes to lacrosse he prefers to be on the defensive side of the field. …

South River fell to Old Mill in the regional semifinals Friday night as the Patriots' defense kept Connor Cox and his talented receiver corps at bay.
One of the most successful seasons in South River football’s history came to an end Friday night, as the Seahawks fell to reigning state champions, the Old Mill Patriots 21-7. After defeating the same Old Mill side in a shootout the previous week, the renowned South River passing game—led by senior quarterback Connor Cox and senior wide receiver Eric Young—was contained by a brutal Patriot secondary, which held the Seahawks to only three receptions in the first half. Patriots running back Shawn Brown made use of his 39 carries, as he gained a massive 225 yards and 2 scores on the ground. Old Mill realized early that the running game was working as they elected to rush on the first 19 consecutive plays and kept with it throughout the game—…

The Wildcats used a balanced offense and stingy defense to move 4-0 on the year. The Seahawks fell to 2-2.
The Arundel High Wildcats continued to roll over their opponents, recording a 49-6 win over rival South River in Edgewater. Arundel used a balanced offensive attack, with six different Wildcats scoring touchdowns. Jack Gordon and Cooper Hibbs combined for 165 yards passing, while running back Matt Davis ran for 85 yards on 12 carries, scoring twice. Arundel went out to a 7-0 lead after Gordon hooked up with Devon Hawkins for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. South River quickly responded with a 49-yard touchdown strike from Connor Cox to Eric Young. But after that, Arundel owned all the scoring, going up 14-6 after a Blake Thornton ran back the ensuing kickoff 95 yards. Tyler Young also added a touchdown with a 43-yard punt …
Students and supporters of South River and Arundel high schools are chatting it up before the big game Friday night in Edgewater.
Social media has forever changed the way people communicate and interact—perhaps nowhere more prevalent than when it comes to high school football “trash talk.” With only a phone and a Twitter account, thousands of proud students can fire away little 140-character messages either supporting the school, or bashing their opponent. Ahead of Friday night’s big game between the 2-1 South River Seahawks and the undefeated Arundel Wildcats, local residents have been quick to spat off their predictions and pride. Even recently graduated students like Nick Sia are getting in on the action. According to students on Twitter, the Seahawks plan a special “blackout,” where every South River fan wears black to support their team. Not coincidentally, …
Local rivals hit the field in Edgewater, with varsity games kicking off a 6:30 p.m.
Last September, the South River High football team put a scare into rival Arundel, losing 31-30 after failing to pull off a two-point conversion in the final seconds. The Seahawks will look to avenge that loss as they host the Wildcats in Edgewater on Friday night. Varsity kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. South River (2-1) is coming off a 28-24 loss to Broadneck, and will need the win to avoid falling behind in the county standings. Arundel, meanwhile, has looked impressive in its 3-0 start. On the offensive side, the Wildcats have enjoyed solid performances from quarterbacks Cooper Hibbs and Jack Gordon as well as wideout Tyler Young. (Arundel's other big deep threat, Aaron Lewis-Cenales, may be out of Friday's game with a concussion…

In 2012, the Southern Bulldogs got their season off to a slow start, falling to Meade High 35-0. In the first half, the Bulldogs kept the Mustangs to zero points, but the third and fourth quarters were a different story, as Meade scored 14 and 21 points respectively. The Bulldogs are set to play hosts to the Seahawks of South River, who crushed Chesapeake High 48-24 in their first county game of the season. …

John Mattingly has become a staple for South River sports, and with a booming voice and eclectic playlist, many couldn't imagine the athletic events without him.
Standing at 6 feet 9 inches tall, John Mattingly is a hard guy to miss. But when it comes to his largest contribution at South River High, it’s not his stature that beckons recognition—it’s his voice. Mattingly has become the unofficial voice of South River athletics as the primary announcer for some of the Seahawks’ teams, including football, basketball and lacrosse. The father of three boys and one daughter, Mattingly began announcing lacrosse games for the Seahawks almost 14 years ago. After his daughter graduated in 2008, he was invited to continue announcing by South River’s principal William Myers, and he’s been doing it ever since. One of his favorite parts of announcing is providing an additional element to the game. “When you can …
