Leopold should go to jail for his abuse of power and disrespect for AA County employees. It is a good thing the police officers had a union to back them up against their accusations that Leopold had them posting and removing campaign signs. The women who made sexual harrassments allegations had no such back up and thus suffered the savaging of the political right wing who got him reelected when …   more ›

SRHS Relay for Life Seeking Participants

The American Cancer Society event is scheduled to take place June 7 at South River High School.

Relay for Life at South River High School is set to kickoff on June 7, and organizers are asking area residents to get involved in the fight against cancer. South River senior Danie Minor, 18, is helping to organize the event, which hits home for her. Minor herself was diagnosed with melanoma when she was in tenth-grade and Minor’s mother is a cancer survivor. “I am a cancer survivor myself and so is my mom,” Minor said. “There are a lot of cancer survivors in our area and I want everyone to know about them. We have a survivor lap during Relay for Life and seeing all the survivors walking is so empowering. I want people to see that.” Minor is on the organizing committee for Relay for Life at South River High and is hoping to recruit more …

Full Circle: Cancer-Surviving Teen Attends First Relay for Life

Emily Johnston, 14, learned she had leukemia when she was 5.

As one of five children, Emily Johnston actually enjoyed going to the hospital for her chemotherapy treatments—it was one of the only ways she got one-on-one time with her parents. Doctors diagnosed Emily with leukemia when she was 5, and as the third oldest of five kids, the young girl enjoyed spending close time with her mother and father—even if it meant painful treatment. “With all her brothers and sisters, she looked forward to the hospital visits,” said Emily’s mother, Elizabeth Johnston. For more than two years, Emily and her family underwent chemotherapy, numerous doctor visits and the birth of three more children—bringing the total to eight children in the family. In October 2006, Emily beat her cancer and went into remission. The…

PHOTOS: Southern Anne Arundel County Relay for Life

Despite the rain, hundreds gathered to celebrate life and raise money for cancer research on Friday night.

More than 200 people filled a stuffy, humid South River gymnasium Friday night for a massive fundraising event, the Southern Anne Arundel County Relay for Life.  Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, hundreds of volunteers and dozens of teams raised more than $66,500 to benefit cancer research. During the event, participants hosted table-side trinkets to raise additional money for the American Cancer Society, and also walked around the makeshift "track" inside South River High. The event was supposed to be outside, but due to rain and a nasty evening forecast it was moved indoors, according to organizer and South River High teacher Wes Baker. Baker, his planning team and volunteers had to move all of their decorations and tables from …

Greatest Person of the Day

Cindy Ringer Raises Money for the South County Relay for Life

Relay for Life events chair has raised money and helped cancer patients in ways she doesn't even know about.

Cindy Ringer is a 42-year-old Edgewater native. While she’s never had cancer, she chairs one of the area's larger Relay for Life events, benefitting the American Cancer Society. Although it is a one-day—overnight—event, Ringer works throughout the year, raising money, organizing, and helping the local American Cancer Society office in Gambrills. Ringer has never had cancer, but she has been touched by it. It took her father’s life when he was just 49 years old. When her daughter, Ashley, wanted to do the Relay for Life a number of years ago, Ringer said that she couldn’t find a team that had room for her and her friends. So Ashley started a new team, “Ashley’s Angels.” Cindy Ringer joined too. Ringer said that her daughter was drawn to the…

Gift-Wrapping for a Cancer Cure

Members of a Relay For Life team held a gift-wrapping fund raiser for the organization. The Relay for Life overnight event will take place at South River High School this summer.

Samantha Anastasis wanted to memorialize her grandfather -- Edward Phillips who died of cancer about 12 years ago -- in a way that would benefit others.  So with help from her brother-in-law, Anastasis of Gambrills decided to lead an American Cancer Society Relay For Life team. Relay For Life teams are known for bringing people together who have been affected by cancer while helping to raise money to fight the disease. Participation in the relay also helps raise spirits for folks battling cancer. "There are people that we've known that have passed away," Anastasis said of loved ones who lost their battle to cancer.  Her brother-in-law, David Lewis, owner of A Healthy Step at Waugh Chapel, sponsored the team, said Anastasis, the team's …
