Community Responds to Police's Distracted Driving Enforcement

Check out what your neighbors are saying about the police department's increase monitoring along Route 2 in Edgewater and south county.

Last week, Anne Arundel County police announced their plan to crack down on distracted driving along Route 2—something that was met with both thankfulness and frustration by Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch readers. In the effort called Operation Eagle, police are hoping to address “the growing problem of distracted driving” in its various forms, such as texting, handling pets or even eating while driving, according to a police press release. However following the announcement, more than 50 comments flooded Patch and its Facebook page as residents expressed either frustration or happiness that police are focusing on the issue. Fact is, officers are not above the law. I have yet to see a cell phone law or distracted driving law that upholds exclusions for officers or any type of government employed persons, as anyone with a govt tag can be seen breaking the laws listed as well. Police Cracking Down on Distracted Driving Along Route 2

Marked and unmarked police vehicles will be looking for texters, eaters and more on Route 2 in Edgewater.

UPDATE (12:20 p.m.)—Anne Arundel County police are attempting to crack down on distracted driving throughout the area by initiating special enforcement practices along Route 2 in Edgewater, according to a press release. In an effort called Operation Eagle, police are seeking to address “the growing problem of distracted driving” in its various forms, such as texting, handling pets or eating while driving, the release stated. “Distracted driving is described as any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving,” officials said in the release. “The behavior of texting while driving has shown to be particularly dangerous as it causes drivers to take their eyes off of the road more than other forms of …
