South River Sports: Week of Jan. 3

The Seahawks are back in action starting Tuesday.

The South River High School wrestling team is undefeated so far this season in county play, but will be heading into potentially dangerous territory with a meet against the Northern High Patriots (4-1) of Owings in Calvert County. The girls varsity basketball team, ranked eighth in the division by MaxPreps, will head into a Thursday matchup at home against Broadneck, ranked seventh. Here's a preview of this week's games and meets for varsity sports. Basketball The girls varsity team (6-1) will play Meade High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at home. At 5 p.m. on Thursday, they'll have a tougher game at home when they face Broadneck (4-0), the only girls basketball team ranked above the Seahawks in county play, according to MaxPreps. However, …

South River High School Sports Week of Dec. 19

Home action this week includes wrestlers on Monday and boys basketball on Wednesday.

The South River High School wrestling team has gone undefeated so far this season, while the girls varsity basketball is starting with a 4-1 record. Athletes are busy early in the week but then take a bit of a break for Christmas with a few teams working the week of Dec. 26. Note: This feature will be suspended until Jan. 2. Basketball Friday's 56-47 win over Severna Park improved the girls varsity team to 4-1. Their only loss this season was an out-of-county game against Riverdale Baptist. This is a bye week. They'll head to Fallston for a Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29. After that, they host Meade High School at home at 7 p.m. Jan 3. South River High School Sports: Week of Dec. 5

The winter sports season starts this week with basketball, indoor track and wrestling.

The teams have been practicing for a few weeks and now it is time to put those practices, scrimages and skill drills into play. Athletes from South River High School are busy every day of the week. Here is a breakdown of the action: The girls varsity team starts the season at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 7) against Annapolis High (away). The girls will be chasing a winning 2010-2011 season (18 wins, 7 losses), which they ended with a regional final loss to North Point. In their last matchup with Annapolis, the Lady Seahawks won, 68-50. On Friday (Dec. 9), the girls will come home to play Southern High at 5 p.m. The boys varsity team will start their season with three games this week. They start with a 6:30 p.m. game (away) on Monday (Dec. 5) …

County Track Athletes Fair Well Against Howard County

Arundel's Davis wins two events to pace 11 county wins.

Arundel senior Dominique Davis was a double winner on Wednesday night at the Anne Arundel County vs. Howard County track & field meet at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD. Davis won the 500 meters in 1:23.24 and also claimed the high jump with a clearance of five feet. “We wanted to give her events that made her happy,” said Arundel head coach Ira Queen, who returned to coach the Wildcats after a one-year stint at Archbishop Spalding. “I don’t know what she was doing last year, but the happier she is the better she performs.” Queen would like to see her reach 1:20.0 in the 500 meters, and achieve the school record in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches) sometime this season. “She’s been improving every meet,” said…
