Edgewater Elementary Celebrates Reading with Book Character Pumpkin Patch

More than 160 pumpkins filled the school's media center this week.

To celebrate the harvest season, Edgewater Elementary hosted a school-wide “Book Character Pumpkin Patch” this week in its media center, featuring gourd-like personifications from Captain Underpants to Pippi Longstocking. In its third year at the local school, the pumpkin patch was on display throughout the week, featuring student projects completed at home, but then shared with other students and teachers. More than 160 pumpkin book characters filled the media center. “I am truly amazed and impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity that our students exhibit with their pumpkin book characters,” said Stephanie Ashley, Edgewater Elementary’s media specialist in an email. For every 25 votes, Target donates $25 to that school.

A fundraiser hosted by Target that's giving money to schools asks parents to chip in with a vote. In the Give With Target promotional fundraiser, for every 25 votes from fans of the school, Target will donate a $25 gift card to that school for supplies. At the time of this article's posting, Cape St. Claire Elementary School was leading Anne Arundel County public schools with 181 votes, with Windsor Farm Elementary School close behind with 125 votes. But looking at the whole state, the Monarch Academy in Glen Burnie is leading with 974 votes. Unfortunately for schools in Edgewater and Davidsonville, only Edgewater Elementary had more than 50 votes, meaning it is set to receive $50 if the fundraiser ended Monday afternoon. Some local …

Not only did they vote for it but their personal comments to those of us who were asking for their support were insulting to say the least....so who cares about South County …   more ›

Edgewater Elementary Parents Plan Protest Outside School

Parents want the school to be renovated sooner than the county executive's proposed budget suggests.

Edgewater Elementary parents plan to protest County Executive John R. Leopold’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2013 on Friday morning outside their school on Mayo Road. The school’s PTA president, Jenny Corkill, told Patch the parents are specifically protesting the fact that the school is not scheduled for renovations in the near future in Leopold’s budget. The protest will take place around 8:20 a.m. Friday, Corkill said. Edgewater Elementary parents were hoping their school would be bumped up for renovations sooner than the previously scheduled 2016. But after Leopold released his proposed budget for fiscal year 2013, the school is no longer on the short list for renovations, meaning they won’t come at least until 2019. “Our school has…

PHOTOS: ‘City Serve’ Spruces Up Edgewater Elementary

A local church group helped improve the appearance of Edgewater Elementary over the weekend.

A volunteer team from Riva Trace Baptist Church’s “City Serve” community outreach program helped give Edgewater Elementary a makeover last weekend. Education involves time and talent, serious professional training and lots of care,” Jean Borduin told Patch. “City Serve provides the opportunity for volunteers to offer hands on appreciation.” Borduin cited Psalm 9:18 as to why the church wanted to help spruce up Edgewater Elementary, one of the oldest schools in the county. “We are simply at our best when we are serving …

A fire department spokesman said firefighters believe a malfunctioning HVAC unit caused the smell.

UPDATE (11:55 a.m.)—Edgewater Elementary was evacuated Friday morning as the day was getting started when a “burning odor” was detected in the cafeteria, Anne Arundel County fire spokesman Chief Michael Cox said. Around 8:15 a.m. Friday, Cox said all the school’s children, faculty and staff remained outside the building while firefighters investigated the cause of the smell. “During the course of [firefighter] investigations, they believe it was a malfunctioning HVAC unit,” Cox said. Edgewater Elementary students were only outside for about 15 minutes and all of them reentered the building after they received the “all clear” from firefighters. One local parent, who asked to be unnamed, claimed that he took his child out of school due to …
