Citizen Support Will Help to Decide Final Rezoning Amendments

County Executive vetoed 21 amendments to the bill. Those who want to keep south county rural should contact the council to get the vetoes sustained

It is important to go to the Sept. 6 meeting of the Anne Arundel County Council to show your support of John Leopold's vetoes of the amendments to the "44-11" District 6 and 7 Rezoning Bill. I agree with the county executive that these amendments are violating the letter and spirit of the Small Area Plan. County planners have agreed to keep south county rural.   Leopold vetoed 16 of 21 amendments that were introduced to rezone south county from residential to commercial and from either open space and residential to a greater density for residential. This is known as "upzoning." If these vetoes are overturned, we fear that these "spot" rezonings will start a domino effect of more and more commercial and high density intrusion into the green…

Council Will Block Leopold's Zoning Bill Withdrawal

The County Executive wants to stop the comprehensive zoning process to reform the process, but some council members say they have no intention of derailing the talks at this point.

County Executive John Leopold said he intends to block a bill that would make sweeping rezoning changes to the central and southern parts of the county, but county council members stand in his path. The county is currently going through the steps necessary to update their comprehensive zoning plan for the next decade. Nearly 50 rezoning proposals in Districts 6 and 7 are on the table for council review later this month. The District 6 and 7 zoning legislation and specific parcels mentioned can be found here. But Leopold has thrown a red flag, saying the public needs a bigger voice in rezoning talks. He said he wants to stop this process and reform it before it goes any further. The county executive announced last week that he would …

I live in South County and I am tired of all the congestion created by greedy developers that throw up housing and shopping centers without any thought of traffic, run off, water pollution, etc., - the list goes on and on. We have polluted the South River, and the back creeks and other waterways that supply the South River are unusable for swimming or crabbing and fishing. Construction continued …   more ›

Zoning Changes Pave Business-Friendly Future for Districts 6 and 7

Fifty zoning change proposals in Anne Arundel County Council Districts 6 and 7 were reviewed on Wednesday. Most were passed on to the county council for a vote later this year.

The future of Anne Arundel County’s Districts 6 and 7 could have a more business-friendly face, should proposed zoning changes be implemented into a plan later this year. The county’s Planning Advisory Board consists of seven county residents appointed by the county executive. The group is charged with filtering through the dozens of upcoming zoning changes that are proposed in a massive update of the county’s zoning maps. Throughout this process, the board reviews county staff recommendations and hundreds of letters from residents, voicing both concern and approval for the changes.  The board then votes on whether to pass on their recommendation to the county council for final review later this year, or strike the proposal down. But on …

I would like to welcome those who were concerned about this to the planet earth, apparently they have not been here very long. There is almost nothing that could be done at 2806 Solomon’s Island Road that would change the tremendous and increasing amount of traffic on that "already busy stretch of highway". What is their real motivation?   more ›
