Two local environmental organizations received more than $50,000 in grants from the Chesapeake Bay Trust on Thursday to build living shorelines along local waterways. Sixteen total recipients received more than $800,000 at a gathering in Eastport while The Chesapeake Bay Trust granted $12,880 to the South River Federation and $39,850 to the West/Rhode Riverkeeper along with 14 other groups. According to the Chesapeake Bay Trust, living shorelines are a stabilization technique that use natural habitat elements like rocks—instead of bulkhead or riprap—to protect shorelines from erosion while also providing critical habitat for fish, crabs and other wildlife. The Chesapeake Bay Trust is once again on the search for people who work to protect and restore the bay. The annual awards program is designed to recognize "outstanding accomplishments by educators, students and individuals who work to advance education while protecting and restoring our great Chesapeake Bay," according to a release. The awards include: Teacher of the Year Award: Given annually to a teacher who motivates and inspires students by promoting environmental awareness and stewardship. The winning applicant will receive a $2,500 award toward funding trust-approved environmental field trips and/or outdoor education work at their school or organization. This is great news for the communities along the South River with direct access to the BAY. London Towne began "shoreline preservation in the 1980's".With determination over the years, lots volunteers and dedicated leadership of Tom Walsh and others has completed shoreline preservation projects stretching over 7 miles.
