'Community Clothes Closet' at Riva Trace Helps Outfit Local Families in Need

Clothes donation program reinforces that the gift of giving is fashionable all year long.

When Teri Jacobson created The Community Clothes Closet, she never expected it to become a trendy idea. The closet got its start four years ago when Jacobson was living in Florida. She saw the need for families who were struggling to purchase clothes for their children. She thought of the clothes closet as a donation program that could collect and re-distribute gently-used clothing to families in need.   “I saw a need not being met and I knew I had to help,” said Jacobson, of Edgewater. Jacobson began collecting used clothes from friends and others and then distributing them to families in need. Boys and Girls Club Golf Tourney at South River Links Earns $80K

Fundraiser 'Tee It Up for Education Golf Classic' had great turnout—including VIPs.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County ventured to south county on Oct. 3 for the 18th annual Adrian L. Merton Tee It Up For Education Golf Classic at South River Links in Edgewater. According to the organizers, they had a great turnout with guests that included Maryland Speaker of the House Michael Busch, former NFL player Lavar Arrington and a number of community leaders. The day started of with a putting contest which matched wit, luck and strategy. More than 100 golfers tried to sink their golf balls simultaneously. The winners of that contest were Tommy Ayers and Rex Lloyd. Next, 132 golfers played in the tournament, which raised almost $80,000 for education initiatives at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Annapolis and …

Want to Give at the Holidays? Try The Giving Place

Edgewater charity opens its doors in South River Colony Main Street to find — and give — to those in need.

Parishioners at Riva Trace Baptist Church in Davidsonville wanted to find a way at Christmastime to really reach into the community and help people who might be struggling this holiday season. In the past, worship pastor Bob Bloomquist said that they put on a dinner-theatre style Christmas performance that was popular. But although it was a good way to entertain people, it wasn't necessarily an opportunity to give back to the community, especially to those less fortunate.  Instead Bloomquist, Teri Jacobson and others from Riva Trace came up with the idea for "The Giving Place."
