Young Library Patrons Head Down 'By the Sea'

The summer reading programs continue with a performance by singer-songwriter and oceanographer Bridgette Michaels at the Edgewater Library in July.

Edgewater Library patrons may have to wait until July 10 for an up-close look at the summer reading program's "By the Sea," but gnarly pirates and chatty clownfish were on hand Wednesday as the West County Area Library kicked off its ocean-themed performance. Singer-songwriter and oceanographer Bridgette Michaels performed in front of about 50 children, offering some marine biology lessons and tips on conservation. Joined by drummer and partner Dawn Madak, the duo sang a half-dozen sea-related songs, including a few originals. They also incorporated a conversation with two puppet clownfish—Barry and Larry—into their routine, and had children act out as pirates and jellyfish as well as other sea creatures. 'Sign Language Dreams' Teaches Kids ASL, Deaf Culture

The Edgewater Library hosted a signing storyteller on Wednesday, teaching children American Sign Language and the power of reading.

Dozens of local children and their parents sat waving their arms frantically inside the conference room at the Edgewater Library on Wednesday morning. Leading the unusual scene was 37-year-old Kathy MacMillan, wearing an outfit devoted to dreams—nighttime-themed pajamas with oversized sheep slippers. The activity wasn’t due to panic or any sort of emergency. MacMillan and the group were applauding, using the American Sign Language (ASL) sign for applause at one of the county library’s summer reading events, Sign Language Dreams. MacMillan, a signing storyteller who teaches children ASL and introduces them to deaf culture, entertained and educated the crowd with stories, songs and audience participation.
