Educators from South River High, Davidsonville Elementary and The Summit School were named teacher of the year finalists.
Two of the five county educators named finalists for the 2013 Anne Arundel County Public Schools Teacher of the Year award are from the Edgewater and Davidsonville area. The public school finalists, selected from a field of 17 semifinalists include teachers from Davidsonville Elementary and South River High. Educators from three high schools, one middle school, and one elementary school make up the field of five finalists announced on Monday, according to a release. The Anne Arundel County Reading Council awarded local students who wrote poetry, stories and essays.
The Anne Arundel County Reading Council has recognized 54 students, including four from the Edgewater area, for their talents as storytellers, poets and essayists. The Council received more than 1,000 entries. The 22 first- and second-place entries will go on to be judged at the state level. Anne Arundel County will honor the high school writers at a reception on Feb. 21, and the younger writers will be honored in April. Michael Bell, the art department chair at Southern High School, is awarded the William U. Harris Award of Excellence.
Southern High School’s art department chair Michael Bell was honored with a national award at a ceremony in New York on Friday. Bell was named a recipient of the William U. Harris Award of Excellence presented by the College Board. According to an announcement, the award honors those who demonstrate a commitment to serve and inspire young people; are dedicated to mentoring and supporting fellow educators; and show a strength and resolve to effect change. “When I think of those educators who consistently perform on an exceptional level in the classroom and overall school community, Michael Bell is always at the top of the list,” said schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell in a statement. “He has been a major influence on the overall visual …

The winner of the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee will compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
Thirty-two area students, including two from area middle schools, will prepare to show off their spelling skills at the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on Feb. 23. Eighteen public school students, 13 private school students, and one home-schooled student will compete to become the county champion, according to a news release. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 28-30. Shane Jackson, a seventh-grader at Central Middle School, and Melinda Cutler, an eighth-grader at Southern Middle School, will both compete on Feb. 23. Four public and one private school educator from the Edgewater, Davidsonville and south county areas are semifinalists for Teacher of the Year.
Seventeen Anne Arundel County public educators and four private school teachers, including five from the Edgewater, Davidsonville and south county areas, have been named semifinalists for the 2013 Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year award. Of the educators nominated, five are elementary school teachers, six teach at the middle school level, five teach at the high school level, and one teaches at a special school. Furthermore, ten of the county’s 12 high school clusters are represented by semifinalists.
