With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.
I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey. “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse. From day one, I’ve believed in him. I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …

Brian McDevitt, a Pasadena man whose death earlier this year incited hundreds of passionate comments on Patch, had alcohol in his system and was excessively speeding when the car he was driving hit another car on Fort Smallwood Road, according to the Maryland Gazette. The posted speed on the portion of Fort Smallwood Road where McDevitt crashed is 50 mph and Maryland law states that a motorist can be charged with driving under the influence…
The local soccer team will need "the perfect storm" to pull off the championship, but parents and coaches are still hopeful.
The following article was submitted by Dynamite mom, Traci Carneal, and edited. The Davidsonville Dynamite GU13 soccer team is living up to its name. This is the girls’ best season ever as they boast five wins, one loss (only one goal scored against them), and 16 goals scored in total against their opponents. In six games, not one goal was scored against the Dynamites. Currently in second place in their division, they have a chance to win the division title, but several things must to happen. According to head coach Clarke Miller, Team Dynamite has to not only beat first place team Locust Point Soccer Club (7-0 with 21 points) on June 3, but the team needs to win its last two games and Locust Point has to either lose their last two games …

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.
The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …
Fire department spokesmen told Patch three juveniles were charged in connection with two debris fires in Lothian.
Officials from the Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal division arrested three juveniles Thursday night in connection with a brush and debris fire at Mount Zion Marlboro and Sands roads in Lothian. According to Anne Arundel County Fire Department Capt. James Rostek, units responded to a report of a fire at 5:45 p.m. Thursday and quickly got the blaze under control. There were no injuries and no damage to any structures, Rostek said. However, an investigation revealed a connection between Thursday night’s fire and a similar incident that occurred about a week ago near Sands Road, Rostek said. Fire Marshal officials arrested three juveniles on arson charges connected to both fires. Anne Arundel County Fire Department Chief Michael Cox said he …
More than a dozen cars had their tires slashed in the Cedarhurst on the Bay community in Shady Side.
More than a dozen car tires were slashed in Shady Side on April 27 in the Cedarhurst on the Bay community in what police labeled a "random act." “It looked like they all happened late evening on the 27th at roughly 11 p.m., going into the early hours of April 28 until about 2 a.m.,” Anne Arundel County police spokesman Justin Mulcahy told Patch. Linda Davis, a resident whose car tires were slashed, contacted Patch about the incident earlier this week, saying many residents still have no clue what happened. “It had to have taken one or more people quite a bit to vandalize these cars, especially when they were on multiple streets,” Davis said. “Yet, no one saw anything.” Cars in the south side of the neighborhood on Cedarhurst Road, and …
Ruling stems from divorce case filed by a couple married in California in 2008.
UPDATED (5:12 p.m.)—Same-sex marriages legally performed out of state must be recognized by Maryland Courts, according to a decision issued Friday by Maryland’s highest court. “Maryland courts will withhold recognition of a valid foreign marriage only if that marriage is ‘repugnant’ to State public policy,” wrote Court of Appeals Judge Glenn Harrell Jr. in the 7-0 decision. Legal experts and Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler said the decision has both immediate and long-term effects—even as the state moves toward a possible referendum on the recently passed law allowing same-sex marriage in the state. Gansler, who in 2010 issued what he called “a forecast” opinion predicting the court would ultimately recognize out-of-state same-…

Two Southern High softball players made the second team All-County list—shortstop Danielle O’Neill and outfielder Brooke Minemier. Both girls are seniors. Head over to The Capital to see the full list of athletes on the list.
Annetta Spruill invites disadvantaged children to her 90-acre farm to bridge the education gap.
More than 30 years ago, Annetta Spruill and her husband created an outdoor classroom on their farm in Tracys Landing to empower children with agricultural knowledge and self-confidence. By opening up her farm, Spruill invited disadvantaged children and taught them the value of science, the environment and the importance of getting an education. Her efforts with the Har-Pearl Spruill Foundation fund summer enrichment camps for deserving children in the region. This week, after three decades of committed dedication to children, the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA) named Spruill as the 2012 Volunteer of the Year, according to a MEDA release. “When I thought of Volunteer of the Year, I immediately thought of Mrs. Spruill.
