The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (known to locals by its acronym, SERC) is a 2,650-acre research center situated on the banks of the Rhode River. SERC is internationally known for its research on riparian habitats and the effects of increasing atmospheric CO2 on plant communities. The center also runs a year-round public education center, offering canoe trips, bird walks and talks by leading scientists.
