Post 226 is the local American Legion, a mutual aid society chartered by Congress and founded to aid veterans. Mayo's Cummings-Behlke Post was awarded a temporary charter in 1947, and became a permanent post in 1950. The post is named for three Mayo residents who gave their lives during World War II and are all interred overseas. The post accepts membership from any member of the military, active or retired. In addition, membership to the Post through the Sons of the American Legion and the ladies auxiliary. The post rents the facilities and grounds for functions including weddings, family reunions, benefits, fundraisers and sports events.
