A local man is organizing and gathering sponsorships for a memorial 5K race to help the family of Kevin O’Brien, the Edgewater man killed during .
O’Brien was killed when a while he was driving on Harwood Road in south county. A , but paramedics pronounced O’Brien dead at the scene.
To help the O’Brien family pay for funeral-related expenses, neighbor and friend Joey Ridgeway has already partnered with and to throw the memorial race.
“I am still in the process of submitting the permits to the county and setting up the account,” Ridgeway said.
The race is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m. Oct. 28, beginning at and taking runners down Mayo Road, through the Woodland Beach community and concluding back at the local gym. There also will be a one-mile walk as an alternative to the 5K, Ridgeway said.
“All proceeds will go to the O’Brien family,” he said.
Following O’Brien’s death, the community came out in strong support of his family by providing large amounts of food and donations for the funeral service. Ridgeway said he hopes the race will just be another way the community can show love and compassion for the local family.
Ridgeway is still seeking business sponsors for the event, and has created a registration website so residents can get involved in the race festivities.
