Davidsonville teen Sarah Melanson made history last week when she became the youngest known woman to complete the Ironman triathlon distances in less than 17 hours, as required, when she completed The ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival, reported The Capital Gazette.
The 17-year-old South River High School grad and West Virginia University freshman told The Capital Gazette that when she set out to compete in the triathlon she never anticipated she would set a record.
“To have that accomplishment. … I didn’t think someone like me would be a record holder by any means," Melanson told The Capital Gazette.
The ChesapeakeMan Endurance Festival took place in Columbia, MD on Sept. 21. The triathlon consisted of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Melanson finished the course in 15 hours, 30 minutes and 39 seconds.
