Davidsonville Gators' 'Middie' Field Hockey Wins Season Championship

After losing their undefeated season to the Crofton Cardinals, the Gators got redemption by defeating that same opponent in the championship.

The Davidsonville Gator fifth- and sixth-grade “Middie” field hockey team won the 2012 season championship Monday after defeating local squads from around the region.

As a part of the Davidsonville Athletic Association, no single player stood out to carry the whole team, but every young athlete stepped up at key situations throughout the entire season. Together, the girls dominated the competition in almost every game of the seasonal playoffs. In their last game of the season, the Gators suffered a disappointing loss in overtime to the Crofton Cardinals, but entered the playoffs ready to play.

The Davidsonville field hockey team started strong with a first-game playoff win against St. Mary’s. Grace Hall (Annapolis Area Christian School) started the Gators success with the first goal. Then, Alexis Seidel (Central Middle) secured the lead, earning the team a 2-0 victory.

In the semifinals against South River, defense ruled the game as Alicia Erlandson (Central Elementary) and Laura Carter (Davidsonville Elementary) blocked shot after shot. Maddy Najmy and Grace Hall scored in the second half, bringing the final score to 2-0.

On Monday, the Gators once again faced the very team that ruined their undefeated record at the end of the regular season—the Crofton Cardinals.

The girls played a nail biter of a game with great shots and amazing saves on both sides, but in the end, after two sudden-death overtimes, neither team could get it in the goal.

For the first time ever, the DAA girls were faced with “strokes,” one-on-one shootouts with the goalie.

Each team had three shots, three different girls. Crofton put up their strongest players but Gators goalie McKenzie Jamison was up to the challenge. She batted the first shot down with her hand and kicked the other two shots right back at the Cardinal team.

The Gators’ Tommi Breshnhan (Edgewater Elementary) Maeve Galaway (Davidsonville Elementary) both had great shots that were saved by the Crofton goalie.  However, Lexi Danielson (Bates Middle) took the last shot for Davidsonville and drilled it into the corner—just out of the goalie's reach to secure the win.

Do you know any athletes on the championship-winning field hockey team? Send them a congratulatory message in the comments below!

Wow what a terrific job girls. You showed good sportsmanship and team work when playing Crofton. Parents and Grandparents alike showed great support for all of you. You deserved the win! Continue to do good work together.
