Southern High Kicks Off New Signature Program

Students will be able to focus specifically on developmental design and applied math to help address local challenges facing south county.

Southern High recently became one of the newest schools in Anne Arundel County to host a signature program, along with Annapolis and Chesapeake high schools.

According to an Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) release, Southern High will officially kick off its signature “Design: Preservation and Innovation” program on Oct. 11 at Greenstreet Gardens in Lothian.

At 5 p.m., businesses, organizations and residents are all invited to attend the official start of the program, according to AACPS. Focused on development design, scientific research, applied mathematics and statistics, the program aims to help students be better prepared for college and the professional world after graduation.

“The program features and embraces value of preserving the area’s qualities of life for all living things, while developing design-thinkers to meet local and global challenges,” according to the release.

Already a National Blue Ribbon Award winner, Southern High hopes the ew program will help it become an even larger focal point of the south county community—a goal new principal Marc Procaccini has had since coming to the school.

Local businesses and organizations already are looking to partner with Southern High to reach new goals, both for the students and the community as a whole, according to an email sent out by the Southern Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce.

An ideal location for such a program. SO CO is still rural enuf to inspire and no one knows the area better than its kids. They love to explore and grow and imagine the possibilities. Congratulations on this giant step forward in education. I am leary of "Business intervention" and direction. These kinds of partnerships can be beneficial, but not if the PUBLIC interest and children's education is subordinated to business promotions or self interests. This type of relationship has to be controlled. Our children can never think that WE as a society cannot provide for our own and that economy/business serves the needs of society, not the other way around.
