Principal Will Myers clearly has a bit of a competitive streak. He can regularly be seen at South River High School sports games and academic competitions cheering for his students.
And for the fourth year in a row, the school has been tops in the Maryland Food Bank's Harvest for the Hungry collection drive.
Myers was recognized for his school's efforts at the Maryland State Department of Education headquarters in Baltimore last Friday for collecting the most food (12,698 pounds) and the most money ($38,396)—more then 1,600 schools in the state.
"This is just a great school community," Myers said before the Baltimore event.
In terms of the food collected, the cluster of schools that feed South River also turned in good numbers. Davidsonville elementary, with 6,021 pounds of food was the third place finisher in food and cash ($11,185) collected while Central Elementary and Central Middle gathered $6,701 and $6,242 in cash contributions.
“I am so proud of our students, staff, and community members who continue to think of others even in these difficult times,” said schools Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell, who attended today’s announcement. “I made a challenge to our schools to reach even deeper because our students need us now more than ever. Giving of ourselves in this way is the best way we to support student achievement.”
According to a statement released by Anne Arundel County Public Schools, citizens in the county collected a record 142,470 pounds of nonperishable food items and an unprecedented $97,465.50 in monetary donations.
The Harvest for the Hungry program is a three week fall collection drive that ends just before Thanksgiving. The food benefits citizens across the state.
