UPDATE: South River's 'Empty Bowls' Invites Community to Feast

The first Empty Bowls event at South River High on Wednesday is sold out.

UPDATE (3 p.m.)—After donating more food than any school in all of Maryland last year during its Harvest for the Hungry campaign, South River High is making another push this year with a brand new event called “Empty Bowls.”

In partnership with local restaurants including The Killarney House, The Chop House, South County Café, Chevy’s and Chick-Fil-A, the school is hosting an all-you-can-eat soup dinner for the community to raise money for families in need.

Wesley Baker, a teacher at South River High and one of the leaders of the Empty Bowls event, said the dinner is just the next step in teaching young people the importance of caring for others. On Monday afternoon, Patch confirmed with Baker that the event is sold out.

"The only thing that people could help me with is another soup sponsor," said Baker via email when asked what else the community could do to help now that the event is sold out. "I have Chevy's, Chickfila, The Chop House, Killarney House, The Steakhouse, and South County Cafe each donating 100 bowls of soup, but I need more if I'm to have more people!"

The event costs $15 with advance purchase and $20 at the door for adults. Children's prices are less. Baker said that one dollar will provide eight pounds of food for a needy family.

“Teaching our students math, reading, and writing is important and necessary, but instilling in them the passion to help others and make a difference in society should truly be what education is about,” Baker said. "The goal for our school this year is to raise one-half million pounds worth of food. Last year we raised 396,662 pounds. It's my hope that no matter how busy each school gets, that they find the time to help others. "

On behalf of the school and its event, Baker wanted to share a special message with the community ahead of Wednesday night’s event in Edgewater.

Please join us for the 1st Annual Empty Bowls event at South River High School on Weds, Nov. 14th from 6-8:30pm.

This is an evening where you can gather with your family for food and fun...all for a good cause!  Dinner features "all you can eat" soups from Killarney House, The Chop House, South County Cafe, Chevy's, and Chick-Fil-a.

Bread is being donated by Panera Bread and beverages will also be provided. We will have entertainment, pottery demonstrations, facepainting, live music, and more!  At the end of the night, everyone chooses a beautiful handmade ceramic bowl to take home with them as a reminder of all the empty bowls (hunger) in our community and that your participation helped ease someone's hunger (proceeds go to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank).

All bowls have been sponsored by the Potters Guild of Annapolis and South River HS's ceramics classes. Advance tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children 2-10 years old (children get soup only, but you may upgrade the ticket to get bowl). They can be purchased by going to www.mrbaker.org and clicking on the Empty Bowls button or by making out a check to South River High School and sending it to attn: Mr. Baker, 201 Central Ave E, Edgewater, MD 21037 (your tickets will be held at school).

Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $20 for adults, $15 for students, and $7.50 for children 2-10 years old (children get soup only, but you may upgrade the ticket to get a bowl).
