At the Anne Arundel County Public School's May 4 Board of Education meeting, members approved a plan to raise the cost of school lunch by 10 cents. The change in price will go into effect beginning August 2011 for the 2011-2012 school year.
The costs will be as follows:
- $1.35 for full-price breakfast
- $2.60 for elementary school lunch (up from $2.50)
- $2.85 for secondary school lunch (up from $2.75)
The cost for reduced-price meals for students in all grades will not be impacted. Milk will remain at 55 cents.
Anne Arundel County Public schools serves approximately 56,000 pounds of local produce each year. They serve roughly 1.6 million breakfasts and 4.6 million lunches throughout the school year.
According to a statement released by the AACPS, nearly 55 percent of the Food and Nutrition Services budget comes from food sales. Another 43 percent comes from federal funding and the remaining two percent comes from state funding.
