Classes were canceled at Southern Middle School in Lothian Monday after a pack of three dogs chased three deer into the building, mauling the deer so severely that they were euthanized.
Anne Arundel County Police were called to the school located in the 5200 block of Solomons Island Road about 3:50 a.m. on the report of an alarm. When police arrived they found a front door with a broken glass and chairs knocked over inside the lobby. Officers then came across a deer down on the floor being attacked a German shepherd.
In another doorway police found a second deer sitting on the floor, injured from apparent bite marks. A second dog, possibly a black Labrador mix, later appeared inside the school.
Animal Control Officers eventually gained control of the German shepherd and Lab mix, securing them in their van. Neither dog was wearing a collar when it was captured, police said.
A third deer was eventually found trapped in a narrow hallway with extensive injuries and it died from its injuries. Authorities euthanized the other two deer because of the severity of their injuries from the dog attacks.
School officials decided to cancel classes due to possible contamination and hazards from the incident. The owners of the dogs were located and the dogs are in the custody of Animal Control at this time.
