County School Bus Routes Now Available Online

About 670 school buses are expected to transport nearly 57,000 kids when classes begin in two weeks.

Classes begin the week of Aug. 27 and Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) recently announced that county school bus schedules are now available online at AACPS.org/buses.

The website lists a complete rundown of all county schools, specifically broken down between various elementary, middle and high schools.

The AACPS release stated that about 670 buses are expected to traverse county roads, transporting nearly 57,000 children to and from school each day on over 560 different routes.

Buses will also travel more than 10 million miles throughout the 2012-13 school year, according to the release.

“Bus service is available to prekindergarten and kindergarten students who live more than one-half mile from their school, elementary students who live more than a mile from their school, and middle and high school students who live more than a mile-and-a-half from their school,” according to the release.

By clicking on one of the schools listed on the website, parents can see a breakdown of specifically where buses will stop, what time it’ll stop and who it is scheduled to transport.

The bus schedule portion of the website will remain online until Sept. 17 and after that, a contact email will be shared with parents who have any questions about the bus routes.

The only county schools not listed on the online routing list are Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School and Monarch Academy. Parents with children there should contact the schools for bus route information, according to the release.

So AACPS high schoolers are picked up as early as 5:45 am, and expected to be ready to absorb AP classes in a sleep deprived brain fog? I'd like to see if Dr. Maxwell and the School Board will get on the bus with them every day, and see how disruptive it is to their growing bodies' physical and mental health. We can do better for our future leaders and workforce. Let's institute a sane start time for schools.

I agree!! That's the middle of the night! Getting picked up at 0545 likely means that a child must get out of bed at 0500.
They are sleepwalking through their entire school day! Not much learning taking place when one is fighting sleep all day. That is dangerous for driving, and unhealthy for metabolism and circadian rhythms. This is not about "laziness." This is a public safety and health issue.

I took a look at a bunch of the bus schedules, and the only buses I saw at 5:45 am were for the PVA (Perfroming and Visual Arts program) at annapolis. Buses coming from west county have to leave that early for kids in this "magnet" program on the other side of the county. Maybe specialty programs like this should have an adjusted start time.

Even leaving aside the buses for magnet programs, almost all of the bus runs start no later than 6:30. This still means that teens have to be out of bed by around 5:30 if they're going to shower, eat a decent breakfast, gather their things and walk to their stop. As Calique mentions below, rising this early is out of sync with adolescent circadian rhythms and represents a public health and safety risk.
Our neighbors to the north in Canada start high schools at 9 am at the earliest, and still manage to have vigorous sports and extracurricular programs. It's time to address this issue.
