Police located a child safe and unharmed Wednesday after a reported possible abduction attempt in Selby-on-the-Bay. After an investigation, they determined there was not any intent to commit abduction or assault the victim.
Anne Arundel County police responded at 4 p.m. Wednesday to a report of an attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl near Edgemont Street and Hillside Drive.
Police said it was reported that two men in an older model station wagon attempted to grab the girl and force her into the vehicle. The girl was not hurt and was able to flee and report the incident.
It was also reported that a small child was seen inside the vehicle, according to police. Numerous patrol officers were then placed in the area while detectives began investigating.
After hearing the accounts of the incident posted by area residents on social media sites, a man walked into the southern district station and spoke to detectives. Police said detectives identified the vehicle and interviewed the two men. Police also found the child who was reportedly in the vehicle safe and unharmed.
Detectives determined the men did not intend to commit abduction or assault the victim. Police said the investigation came to a close quickly thanks to the immediate reporting by the victim and the coordinated police response.
As a reminder, police advised that the public is strongly encouraged to report suspicious circumstances such as this so that they may be immediately investigated.
According to police, in this case there "should be no additional concern for trepidation."
