A man grabbed a shovel in a futile effort to prevent himself from being stabbed by an acquaintance Saturday, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Officers were called to Browning Court in Glen Burnie around 7:15 p.m. Saturday for a reported stabbing.

Joseph John Dumsha of Pasadena allegedly stabbed a 27-year-old man in the chest. He and a witness were on scene when officers arrived.

According to police, an argument between Dumsha and the victim started in Brooklyn Park. The victim and a witness left in a vehicle and were followed by Dumsha. At a traffic light, Dumsha allegedly got out of his car and tried to fight the victim without success. He continued to follow the victim and witness until both parties reached Browning Court.

Police say Dumsha got out of the car with a knife and approached the victim, who unsuccessfully tried to defend himself with a shovel. Dumsha allegedly stabbed him in the chest.

The names of the victim and witness were not released by police. The victim was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment. All three involved in the incident knew each other, authorities said.

Dumsha was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree homicide, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
