Man Bites Officer's Leg in Alleged Attack

Police said the man was possibly under the influence of drugs.

A Shady Side man allegedly attacked police and bit an officer's leg Monday while possibly under the influence of drugs, according to a police press release.

Police charged Rico Carl Smith, 41, of Nick Road in Shady Side, with reckless endangerment, assault, attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Anne Arundel County police said officers responded to a call of an armed man with a knife at the 5200 block of Nick Road near Scott Town Road in Shady Side. The person who called police said the man was acting irrationally and threatening to cut himself, according to the news release.

After arriving at the home, officers suspected the armed suspect was under the influence of phencyclidine (PCP) based on his behavior and prior knowledge, police said. Officers then tried to disarm the man and take away his knife.

While trying to subdue the suspect, a violent struggle ensued and he allegedly attacked police. The suspect tried to disarm one officer and allegedly bit another one in the leg, according to the release.

Officers defended themselves, called for emergency assistance and eventually used a stun gun to control the man, according to police.

An ambulance transported one officer and Smith to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

The news release said the officer was released from the hospital.

He does not to be in jail although he assulted a police officer, he needs to be put in a rehabilitation center he was under the influence, he is actually the most lonf, considerate, loving person especially to elderly ppl he loved helping them, he would give you the shirt off his back & no i am not his girlfriend i am just a friend that has know him for 18 yrs + jail is not going to help him he needs rehabilitation, if he was in his right state of mind i would agree with jail but he wasn't it was all because of DRUGS, he took care of me after a major cancer surgery he was there for me everyday helping me build my self back up waiting on me hand & foot does that fit the profile of someone to assult an Officer, no he has always had respect he has an illness called ADDICTION, those individuals do not need to be in jail they need to be evaluated and put in the proper facilities, Rico would never tell u no to no mater what you asked him he has always keep his promise to helping others espet the elderly , he would make it a point to visit the elderly if had not seen them outside or just to check on them once again he is a lovable person ,he doesn't have a great background
but the court's haven't taken in consideration that every thing he has done refers back to his drug addiction illness, instead they stick you in jail ,instead of helping ppl with a drug problems

Some ppl are IGNORANT and have no knowledge about an addictions, & how drugs alter your mind, if they did they would not leave stupid comments they need to pick uo a book if they can read and extend there level of intelligence

Clearly, he is a fine, upstanding citizen who bears no responsibility whatsoever for his drug problem. Drug addiction is not an illness. An illness is a condition that attacks your body, like cancer. Drug addicts are addicts because they made really stupid decisions. I do not doubt he is a nice guy, but people need to stop making excuses for criminals and hold them accountable for the choices they make. And before you judge other people's level of intelligence, please learn the difference between THEIR and THERE.
