Update (11:15 a.m.)—A 30-year-old man is in critical condition after he lost control of his car and struck a utility pole on Mayo Road near Shoreham Beach Road on Tuesday, according to Anne Arundel County police.
At about 9:55 p.m., southern district officers responded to the area of Central Avenue East, just north of Shoreham Road for a report of a serious car accident. Upon arrival, they found a 1998 Honda CR-V that had crashed into a utility pole.
An initial investigation revealed that the driver drifted off the right side of the roadway and in an effort to correct himself, he overcompensated, steered sharply to the left and lost control of the car. The vehicle spun across the southbound lanes, slid off the west side of the road and ultimately stuck a utility pole, police said.
The driver, a 30-year-old man from Harwood, suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to Chief Keith Swindle of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
Police said preliminary information indicated that the driver was not wearing his seat belt when the crash occurred, and that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in causing the accident.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
