Odie The Optimist

Meet Odie, a lovable, special needs pug who is looking for his special someone.

Hey, guys! My name is Odie, and I’m one of those glass-half-full types of dog. I find joy in the simple pleasures of life, like snuggling with my person and eating treats of any kind. Love and food... what more do you need? I’m a six or seven year old pug, weigh a little over 20 pounds, and am almost totally blind, but that doesn’t stop me or dampen my spirits. I’m a healthy and resilient dog who is both confident and social, and I love to share affection.

Mutts Matter rescued me on Thanksgiving eve, when a kind soul reached out to them for help. I’m a casualty of divorce, and then my dad no longer wanted me, so he wouldn’t let me in the house. I was living outside, tied up to porch and exposed to all the elements. This was a pretty scary situation for a sight-impaired pup like me, but luckily my mom reached out to rescue for help, while some of my neighbors watched out for me, giving me food when I was hungry.

As you can imagine, I wasn’t in the best shape when I came into rescue. I had severely dry eyes from the wind and cold, skin and ear infections, my teeth were neglected, and I was in pain from eating something that cut the inside of my mouth. My dad would throw my food on the ground to feed me, and without being able to see, I must have accidentally chewed on something sharp and cut myself. After some antibiotics, drops for my eyes, a little dental work, and some good old-fashioned TLC, I’m doing great now. My coat is back to being beautiful and, as you can see, I’m still quite handsome. Just check out my pics!

Even though my home life was tough, I’ve always known there were better things in store for me and never lost faith in people. I hit the jackpot in my new foster home, and really love it here! I have an awesome foster mom named Barbara who nursed me back to health, two pup siblings who keep me company during the day, and a dog walker who takes me out for my daily adventure. I really love to go on walks and get very excited when it’s time to go out in the world. I don’t go very fast because of my limited sight, and I have a heightened sense of smell, so I like to make sure I sniff everything on the ground and explore.

My foster home is a very safe and nurturing environment, and my foster mom uses a baby gate to block off access to the stairs and lets me wander around on the main level during the day. I’m great with my routine and very predictably on schedule. My foster mom knows when I need to go out to potty, and I’ve had no accidents in the house. I’m a very neat and tidy pup, and during the day I just mull around or hang out on my favorite cushy blanket and wait for her to come home. As soon as she comes through that door and I hear her voice, I greet her with an excited sigh and stay right by her side. She affectionately calls me the Velcro dog because I love to jump up on the couch and burrow in right next to her.

My favorite thing is to be near my people, and I’m making up for some lost time. Having an owner who works from home, or is home a good part of the day, would really be the best fit for me. I’m not a hard dog, but I do need someone who will watch out for me and make sure there are no dangers or obstacles in my path, and continue my regular dental cleanings and eye drops to keep me in tip-top shape. A fenced yard would be a good idea, and I’m fine with older kids – just means more humans for me to love on.

If you have some love to share and a little extra space in your home for a special pup like me, I can be your most loyal, lovable companion.
