Meet Dashing Duke

Duke is a loving Mastiff who's ready to be your loyal companion.

Hey there! My name is Duke. I’m a young, handsome, and loving Bull Mastiff Mix with attention-grabbing good looks. A lot of folks say I’m pretty, but I prefer “regal” or “handsome,” and “dashing” also has a nice ring to it. I’m about eighteen months old and weigh 80 pounds, but I’m still filling out and have some puppy playfulness and curiosity in me.

I was rescued out of a shelter in Maryland after my owners decided to surrender me because they were moving. So much for a lifetime commitment... When the shelter got too full and my time was running out, Mutts Matter stepped in to save me and here I am today, ready for my second chance at a great life.

Not only am I good looking with a big, beautiful smile, but I really love people and am a very affectionate dog. I love to be petted, and belly rubs are my absolute favorite. My foster mom calls me a sweetheart and says I’m a goofy love ball. I’ll take praise and affection over treats and toys any day, and I’m always eager to please. Perhaps I’m a hair too big to be a lap dog, but I’m always game for cuddling if you are.

I got hooked up with some very cool foster parents who are giving me lots of love, and they’re helping me settle in and learn good manners. I’m already crate-trained and potty-trained, and we’ve been practicing my leash walking skills every day. I love to go on walks and am actually pretty good on the leash, but I still have the occasional reaction if I see a stray kitty or bunny go by. What can I say? I’m a dog. It’s my nature, and we’re working on it. I’ve learned to sit patiently before we go out the door for a walk, and I wait until my foster mom is ready to leave and let her take the lead. She says I learn quickly and am pretty intuitive, and most of the time I understand what she wants from me, and I aim to please.

I’m a well-balanced dog who goes with the flow and will make a great ambassador for my breed. I’m social, good with people and other dogs, and I’m not protective of my food or toys. You can easily take things away from me.  I’m not a big jumper either, but I am very strong, and as a solid, 80-pound dog, I need an owner who is committed to my training and has some experience handling large pups like me.

I’d be a great family dog and like kids, but because of my size I’m probably best in a home with kids over seven. I do like other dogs and love to play, but don’t always know my strength, so if you do have another dog for me to pal around with, it would probably be best if they had a little size to them too.

Like with all young pups, the key to me settling into my new home will be a nurturing family that is committed to my development, and to getting me the daily exercise, stimulation, and love that I need to stay healthy and balanced. I’m a social boy and always up for new adventure, and will make someone an excellent companion and co-pilot.
