Bouncing Butters

Looking to add some puppy love and energy into your life? Meet Butters, a sweet and playful one-year-old terrier pup in search of his family.

Hi Guys! My name is Butters. I'm a sweet and energetic one-year-old terrier mix who weighs about 45 pounds. I was rescued from a shelter in Rockingham County, Virginia after my owner surrendered me. He said he no longer had time to take care of me, and that I had grown larger than he expected. Jeez… like I have any control over that!

The shelter was concerned about me, and called Mutts Matter in to help because I was going a little crazy being cooped up in there with very little outside time or exercise. I was just not cut out for the chaotic environment of a shelter, and am so glad someone came to my rescue. As a young pup, I’ve already had to face the world on my own and have learned that it can be a scary place.

You see, I'm a very social and affectionate dog and really need the attention of my people. I lucked out and got a great foster dad, Gabriel, who really gets me. I always want to be near him, and I follow him around everywhere because he’s the first stability I’ve had in a long while, and I trust him. He knows that I love to be held, scratched, and petted, and when I get too excited, he will hold me close and scratch behind my ears, and that calms me right down.

I also have a foster sibling, Pearl, a playful golden retriever who is my best bud in the world. As you can see in this video, I love to run, play, and wrestle with her. My main goal in life right now is to get Pearl to play with me. She’s not always up for it, so I’ve had to figure out some creative ways to get her attention. Sometimes I’ll bark at her, and sometimes I’ll sneak away or trade toys to get her to chase me and play some more! I’ve also come to quickly accept my two kitty siblings. At first I wasn't sure what to make of them, but I’ve grown to love them, and will shower my foster cat brother with affection – when he lets me.

My foster dad is helping me settle into home life and I now have a routine that I’m familiar with. Every morning after playtime, I know to go into my crate when my dad leaves for work, and I don’t even whine about it. I know he’s coming back for me, and he always leaves a few chew toys to entertain me during the day. I LOVE bones and chewing. He’s also been working with me on some basic commands like "sit" and "down," and I have those down, especially if treats are involved. We’re still working on “stay,” but that one is a little tougher because why would a dog like me want to stay in one place for so long?

I still have a lot of puppy energy and curiosity in me, and would do best in an active home with kids or other dogs. A house with a fenced back yard is ideal, but not required, as long as my new family is committed to walking and playing with me daily to address my higher energy level and help me stay healthy and balanced. I’m not a couch potato dog, but I would make a great running partner. Because I’m still young and learning the ropes, I need a home that offers me a consistent routine, and basic obedience training would serve me well.

I can't wait to have a family of my own. I love everyone: kids, dogs, and kitties too, and will be a fit with all kinds of families. I’m just a sweet, adorable puppy in need of some people to love... If you need a puppy to love you, I’m your dog!
