in Edgewater is hosting a special NFL season kick-off celebration on Sunday as the local watering hole becomes an official Redskins bar.
Accompanied by Redskins cheerleaders, the establishment will officially be declared as a Redskins bar, recognized by the team and its affiliates.
Co-owners Joe McGovern and Stan Fletcher both grew up in Washington, DC as diehard Redskins fans, so earning the recognition as a Redskins bar is a big deal for both men.
“It’s nice to hopefully have something to cheer about the next few years,” McGovern told Patch, referring to new Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. “There’s a strong Redskins contingency in the south county area.”
The ‘Skins play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at 1 p.m. and McGovern said the NFL season will bring even more folks to their increasingly popular all-you-can-eat brunch buffet. Official Redskins cheerleaders are scheduled to visit the Stan and Joe’s in Edgewater on Sunday from about 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. where they will sign autographs and take pictures with the bar’s patrons, McGovern said.
The co-owners acknowledged that the south county area is also home to plenty of Ravens fans, but McGovern said there’s still plenty of room for Baltimore fans at the bar.
“[Ravens fans] are always welcome. We have enough TVs for everybody and the nice thing is, the Ravens and Redskins don’t play each other a lot,” McGovern said. “At the end of the day, we’re all sports fans.”
Stan and Joe’s will host its pre-game tailgating buffet Sunday morning and then feature its NFL $5.95 menu throughout games in the afternoon.
“I’m looking forward to this fall,” McGovern said. “The Redskins, the Ravens, the Nationals and my Orioles are all doing well. It’s a sports fan’s dream.”
