Stan and Joe's to Become an Official Redskins Bar

Team cheerleaders will be at the local watering hole on Sunday to celebrate the special recognition.

in Edgewater is hosting a special NFL season kick-off celebration on Sunday as the local watering hole becomes an official Redskins bar.

Accompanied by Redskins cheerleaders, the establishment will officially be declared as a Redskins bar, recognized by the team and its affiliates.

Co-owners Joe McGovern and Stan Fletcher both grew up in Washington, DC as diehard Redskins fans, so earning the recognition as a Redskins bar is a big deal for both men.

“It’s nice to hopefully have something to cheer about the next few years,” McGovern told Patch, referring to new Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. “There’s a strong Redskins contingency in the south county area.”

The ‘Skins play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at 1 p.m. and McGovern said the NFL season will bring even more folks to their increasingly popular all-you-can-eat brunch buffet. Official Redskins cheerleaders are scheduled to visit the Stan and Joe’s in Edgewater on Sunday from about 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. where they will sign autographs and take pictures with the bar’s patrons, McGovern said.

The co-owners acknowledged that the south county area is also home to plenty of Ravens fans, but McGovern said there’s still plenty of room for Baltimore fans at the bar.

“[Ravens fans] are always welcome. We have enough TVs for everybody and the nice thing is, the Ravens and Redskins don’t play each other a lot,” McGovern said. “At the end of the day, we’re all sports fans.”

Stan and Joe’s will host its pre-game tailgating buffet Sunday morning and then feature its NFL $5.95 menu throughout games in the afternoon.

“I’m looking forward to this fall,” McGovern said. “The Redskins, the Ravens, the Nationals and my Orioles are all doing well. It’s a sports fan’s dream.”

The Stan and Joe's on West Street has over 100 members of The Steelers "Behind Enemy Lines" Fan Club.......So we figured to mix it up a little!!

Stan & Joes is a great place; both Annapolis and Edgewater! Great service, great food and the best drink specials in Maryland! Happy hour all day (til 10) on Mondays and half price apps and drinks other days during HH, game specials, Golden Tee, Buzztime, live music, outdoor seating... Great weekend brunch. Awesome Bloody Mary Bar! Very nice for a pub setting. Thank you Stan and Joe!

The Turtle is better and they are a Redskins bar too! Much more room to move around!

Tried to capitalize on the popularity of the West St. location by taking over the space of a former failed bar. They only added some TVs and tacked up some free beer signs received from the local distributors then opened the doors. It's nothing special, and they haven't taken any business away from the Steakhouse or the Turtle. Now they're trying to drum up business during the slow season by proclaiming themselves a "Redskins Bar". What, aren't there enough Steelers fans in Edgewater? --- How's that for an educated opinion, Stanley Davis?
Joe McGovern September 06, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Well DW, Our goal was never to take business away from others, but to help build a struggling local economy. I wish the Turtle & the Steakhouse nothing but success and we call quite a few of there staff, friends. As for the simplicity of opening a bar, in my 27 years as a bar person (from busboy to owner), it is not as easy as slapping up a few signs. The fact that we are hanging our hats on the Skins simply comes from my growing up in DC and bleeding burgundy & gold. THAT being said, my college roommate & close friend to this day made me a fan of the Steelers 20 years ago and I have drank enough Iron City to prove it. Stan and Joe's is a Local Sports Fans Sports Saloon and whatever we have done to make you so negative, I personally apologize & invite you to come in & say hello. Joe-Owner

1. Tried to capitalize on the popularity of the West St. location by taking over the space of a former failed bar. True! Except they didn't try, they did! 2. They only added some TVs and tacked up some free beer signs received from the local distributors then opened the doors. False! They have great staff, specials, food and the Firefighter theme from Annapolis brings connectivity to the sister pub! 3. It's nothing special, and they haven't taken any business away from the Steakhouse or the Turtle. True, it's just a pub! Nicer than the ones you mention (although Steak House does have very cold beer!) I woudn't call the pub special, just damn nice! 4. Now they're trying to drum up business during the slow season by proclaiming themselves a "Redskins Bar". What, aren't there enough Steelers fans in Edgewater? True! Guess you're not too savy in the ways of business! Hope you open a pub! 5. How's that for an educated opinion, Stanley Davis? I can't answer for Stanley, but your sad attempt at a reply (other than the spelling) shows no education, just a sorry opinion, look in the mirror!

Stan and Joes south is an awesome place, besides the fact I'm a redskins fan. They gave me a place to hold my fundraiser every wednesday night including live music(which they paid for) without hesitation. They do many thing for tge community and then some! S&J's south is awesome in more ways than a great bar and the coldest beer on tap. Kudos to you guys !!! Shane M

Chaz, you’re so clever. Well, not really, pretty lame if you ask me. Sorry you donkeys were so offended. I'm just calling it as I see it. The only difference between S&J’s and Shockers is the name and better management. It's the exact same bar. I don’t think it lasts another 2 years unless it gets some personality and stands out from the competition somehow. It's just not there right now. Maybe anointing themselves a 'skins bar will boost Sunday business for the next 4 months, but from what I saw of the place last week it won't be enough. 3 people in the place at 10pm Thursday night. It’s like that for a reason. Those reasons are what I’ve already stated. I have no hate for Stan or Joe, and would like to see the business succeed. But the fact of the matter is, between the four bars/restaurants in that area, S&J’s would be 3rd on my list of destinations after the Turtle and Bateman’s. The Slophouse would be last.
