Shoppers looking for a fresh-cut Christmas tree have several tree lots to choose from in Edgewater, Davidsonville, Riva and Mayo. We visited the lots in town to get the lowdown on their merchandise, presented in the table below.
In selecting a tree, the National Christmas Tree Association suggests that shoppers look for signs of dryness or deterioration, like excessive needle loss and discolored foliage.
The association also offers these tips for keeping a freshly-cut tree "fresh":
- Have them remove a half-inch disk from the base after you have selected your tree. All of the local lots have chain saws to do this quickly.
- When you get the tree home, set it in a bucket of water overnight to take up water before putting it in the stand.
- Use a reservoir-type stand and keep it filled with water.
These steps will minimize needle loss.
The association also suggests placing the tree away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, vents). Aside from creating a fire hazard, this will keep the tree from drying out too quickly, which speeds needle loss.
