A local woman and former Anne Arundel County school teacher plans to open a tutoring and therapy center this summer for kids who need a little extra help in school.
“It is kind of an all-inclusive tutoring service,” Lowery said. “We do comprehensive education and psychological evaluations and assessments.”
Lowery said if a child is struggling in school, they can come to Thinktank for an evaluation, done by professionals, and then participate in one-on-one tutoring with Lowery based on the results of the assessment.
After eight years of teaching in local schools, Lowery then spent more than a year working at the Education and Therapy Center in Millersville. After working at the center, she decided she wanted to be able to help children on an individualized basis.
“I guess what I really like is being able to focus on the child and really zoom in on what they really need to make progress,” Lowery said. “I loved being in a classroom and I still love teaching, but when you are in a one-on one-session you can really build a relationship. And the progress you build with one-on-one is really unbelievable.”
Lowery decided to open Thinktank on June 3 because many kids tend to fall behind in school during the summer when they are out of the classroom. She hopes that by tutoring students over the summer, she will be able to help them maintain their reading and math skills.
The cost of service at Thinktank will vary, Lower said. An evaluation will differ in cost based on the consulting team of psychologists and special education teachers that are needed. Lowery said the cost of a tutoring session will run at about $55 a session.
Lowery said the goal of Thinktank will be to help students develop the long-term skills that will lead to successful academic careers.
“Every child has the chance at success, but it is about finding the strengths in the child and pulling it out of them,” Lowery said.
