After five days of steady business, Edgewater’s newest lunch
and breakfast joint is gearing up for owners anticipate will be busy first
Chas & Fran’s Place, located at 118 Mayo Rd., open quietly Monday morning, with a few customers coming in at 6 a.m., but the restaurant was “bombarded” by 9 a.m. according to owner Frannie Thompson, and also enjoyed a busy lunch hour as well.
“Things are going great,” Thompson said.
Thompson and her husband Chas opened the new restaurant after their store, Davidsonville Country Market, closed in August when they were unable to renegotiate the lease with the property owners.
Now the two are running a sit-down café that specializes in home cooked breakfasts and lunches. The hours at Chas & Fran’s Place are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., meaning Thompson arrives at around 4:15 a.m. and her staff follows at 5 a.m., though she says she’s an early bird and doesn’t mind the hours.
A full meal at the new restaurant will run you anywhere from $3.99 to $7.99. The menu offers a lot of old favorites, like Frannie’s Reuben sandwiches, egg salad and BLTs as well as all of her homemade candies and desserts. However, now that people can sit down to eat, there are expanded breakfast and lunch offerings.
So far, Thompson has said she’s seen a lot of familiar faces walking through the door.
“The majority of them are our regular customers, and a few new ones from Edgewater,” she said.
All of them are happy to have a home-cooked meal, she added.
Thompson said she’s gearing up for what she thinks will be a busy weekend by making sure she has enough food on hand to feed all of her customers.
“There’s nothing like sitting down and asking for scrapple and having there be no scrapple,” Thompson said.
There’s not much parking available at the restaurant, but she gotten permission to use the lot at Lithopress—right next door at 116 Mayo Rd.—for overflow parking. That’s also where she gets the restaurant’s menu’s printed, because Thompson said she likes to support her fellow local business people.
If you love Chas & Fran’s so much you want to work there, Thompson is hiring for a cashier to work from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Interested parties can inquire at the restaurant.
Chas & Fran’s Place is located at 118 Mayo Rd. and is open from 6 a.m.-2p.m., seven days a week.
