The Londontowne Symphony will close its season with a concert titled "The Tragic and the Triumphant".

The orchestra will open with Rossini's Overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie), a melodramatic opera filled with tragedy and despair. This will be followed by the Horn Concerto No. 4 by Mozart whose life and music were both tragic and triumphant. And the concert will close with Tchaikovsky's exuberant and triumphant Symphony No. 5 -- one of the most heroic works of all time.

The featured soloist for the horn concerto is James Nickel who has served as Third Horn with the National Symphony Orchestra since 2008. Previously he was the Assistant Principle horn with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and Associate Principle horn with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as guest Principle Horn with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra on their European tour in 1998, and performed with the orchestras in Houston, Detroit, Fort Worth, Rhode Island, and the Boston Philharmonic. He can be heard on recordings by the National, Dallas, Detroit, and Montreal symphonies, and also with his horn colleagues from the Dallas and Houston symphonies on their Crystal records CD Texas Horns.

The overture will be directed by Guest Conductor Gerald Cavanaugh, head of the music department at South River High School.  The remainder of the concert will be directed by Anna Binneweg who has returned from her European conducting debut.

General admission is $15, seniors are $10, and all students and children are free when accompanied by a paying adult.  Tickets are available at the door or before the concert by visiting the LSO site at www.LondontowneSymphonyOrchestra.org or by calling (410) 562-8920.

The LSO is delighted to serve its community through quality classical music by continuing to highlight the gems of the orchestral repertoire, while featuring wonderfully talented local soloists and outstanding orchestra members.
