Local Hogs for Heroes motorcycle enthusiasts collected and delivered presents for underprivileged children Saturday as part of the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots holiday drive.
Approximately 20 bikers from throughout the area, including Hogs for Heroes local chapter President Rebecca Oakley, picked up donated toys and dropped them off at a Marine recruitment center in Bowie. With donation centers at Renegade Classics of Annapolis in Edgewater and Southdale Bowling in Pasadena, Oakley said at least 15 boxes were "jam packed" full of toys donated by local residents.
"It gave me goosebumps. I think everybody was just thrilled because [the boxes] were so jam packed. We filled the whole bed of the pickup truck, the front seat and the back seats. They were just loaded," Oakley said.
Beginning at Renegade Classics of Annapolis on Solomons Island Road, the bikers then rode to Southdale Bowling in Pasadena before delivering the holiday gifts at the recruitment center.
“The toys were loaded on a truck and the Hogs for Heroes convoyed on their motorcycles to the Marine Corps recruiting command post,” Oakley said. “I give a big hand to these folks for allowing us to do what we do well.”
U.S. Marine Michale A. Hauck assisted with the toy delivery, and Oakley said the event was a great time for the community and the bikers to celebrate all the donations gathered for children since Nov. 17 when the drive began.
"[Hogs for Heroes] wanted to get involved so we can make sure all the children had a special Christmas," Oakely said.
