What Should Replace This Vacant Business Space?

What do you think should replace the old Giant grocery store on Solomons Island Road?

Businesses come and go all the time—it's the nature of the industry.

It's never pretty to see vacant business space in your local town, but there are several unoccupied buildings throughout the Edgewater and Davidsonville areas.

As part of a Vision for Vacancies feature here on Patch, I'd like to highlight local vacancies and see what you want to see in its place.

To kick things off, here is the shopping mart-sized building on Solomons Island Road in need of a makeover. So what would you put in its stead?

The building used to be an old Giant and was even a temporary costume shop around Halloween.

What do want to replace the vacant shopping mart building on the west side of Route 2? Cast your vote in the comments!

An indoor sports area. Lax, soccer, basketball, it's endless. Calvert county has one in Huntingtown and from what I understand it does very well.

Wegmans! Best grocery store EVER! And if we can't get that Harris Teeter is a close second. Both are so much better than Giant or Safeway

Wegmans is going to be in crofton of Rt. 3 so I don't know if they'll put another one that close, but I agree Wegmans is awesome.

I am all for a place that we can have for the kids like indoor sports, art center or something to keep them occupied and out of trouble but affordable for the parents to send their kids to. I have always said Edgewater needs a bigger dollar store with a freezer section : ). (Like Annapolis--Did you know they sell Tilapia and eggs!!) A TJ Maxx or Marshalls would be awesome to as well as a Joanne Fabrics or a Hobby Lobby : ) I would never have to leave Edgewater ever again!!! ; )

Trader Joes will always get my vote! But definitely NOT a place for teens to hang out at night. I live in Southdown. If kids can be there during decent hours and then go home? No problem.

A rec center would be great. We are business owners ourselves in Edgewater and frankly, are sick and tired of kids hanging out in front of our stores...getting people to obtain them cigs illegally, biking and skateboarding up and down our sidewalks, and hanging out leaving trash everywhere and making drug deals out in the open...by the time we call the cops...they are gone...customers really don't like it. Soooooooo.....a place for them to go and possibly learn REAL social skills and to 'play' like normal kids would be nice..but then again...they are a product of their home life and the parents could care less...so ...maybe a Hobby Lobby would be awesome....I love crafts and Joann's is wayyyy too small and they don't carry lot so stuff and Michael's it too expensive!!

I would not be upset to see a YMCA or a Traders Joes
in this space either.

How about a Charter School? Or some sort of place where every room Has a different theme where children can try out different professions. There was a place like this in South Florida called Wannado City. It was awesome! Good space for something like this!

The Fiat dealership that required special zoning to put it further north on Rt 2 (at the old police station). Are we sriously going to re-zone land that should be residential with a viable alternative less than 1 mile away?

I am all for a rec center there or something else for kids. If not that then why not put the Fiat dealership there, rather where they want to put it at the old Police station which is in a neighborhood.

I like either the bowling alley or the ice skating rink or a movie theater. There are already three gyms in Edgewater, three grocery stores, a hardware store, and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at. Trader Joes already has a very popular location just about five miles over the bridge, so I doubt they would put one over here.

A sports/rec center for the community. Like indoor basketball for adults and kids. Gymnasium for tumbling, yoga, dancing, Area for skateboarding, rollerblading, etc. Something affordable for everyone. I think it would be great.

I agree with the indoor sports / rec. center. That would be great... Better yet... tear it down and plant some trees. How about a dog park? Please NO MORE RETAIL... especially not another BIG BOX store (Wal Mart, Lowes, Target, etc.) or another grocery store! If it has to remain a "building", I'd prefer for it to be an American company... not an Aldi (German) or another Food Lion (French) or another GIant (Dutch)! I'll save the Wal Mart debate for another time... but before wishing for yet another Walmart dotting an overly-saturated Balt-Wash retail landscape or choosing to shop at an existing Wal Mart, please consider how many US Dollars are being sent to China via Wal Mart. I wish more people connected the dots and understood how important it really is to buy American goods and shop American companies...

Something for kids is desperately needed - we don't even have a decent playground in the area. Olive Garden? Seriously? Whatever it is I hope it is NOT another chain restaurant. Glad to see most of the suggestions are to help with the problem of nothing to do for our youth around the area. When my grandchildren come to visit from PA we are always scrambling to find something for them to do... Mini golf and ice cream or skating is a great idea. But at $7000/mo average to rent space around the area - good luck...
