Three South River High School athletes have recently committed to continue their athletic careers in college.
According to athletic director David Klingel, football standout Lavon Chaney has committed to play football at Monmouth. Field hockey star Abbey Lawrence will be playing at Lasalle, and Michael Seaberg will swim at Duke.
In the 2012 season, Chaney helped lead the Seahawks to their first postseason appearance since 2006. He consistently led the state in rushing yard and was named Capital Gazette Communications’ Football Player of the Year.
During his senior year, Chaney led Anne Arundel County with 1,491 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns on 159 carries and averaged 9.4 yards per carry, according to The Capital Gazette.
In field hockey, Lawrence helped lead South River to a state title in 2012. The Seahawks defeated Catonsville 6-0 to win the Class 4A state field hockey championship.
The field hockey standout was also selected to the first-team All-State squad after the 2012 season.
Seaberg helped lead the South River swim team to a state title in his sophomore year and recently told Patch he picked Duke because during his college visit the campus "just felt right."
