Support Snohawks at Greene Turtle Fundraiser

The school's Polar Bear Plunge team is hoping to surpass its goal of $20,000 with a local fundraiser Tuesday night.

A team of South River High School students are having their fundraiser Tuesday night at the Edgewater Greene Turtle as part of an effort to raise more than $25,000 for this year’s Polar Bear Plunge.

South River junior Stephan Hincks said his team, the “South River Snohawks,” raised more than $25,000 in last year’s plunge, which supports Special Olympics Maryland. With less than two weeks to the annual dip in the Chesapeake Bay’s frigid waters, Hincks hopes his team can exceed last year’s mark.

To do that, the Snohawks are having a special fundraiser at the Greene Turtle with 10 percent of Tuesday's sales going to the team’s effort. No flyer or coupon is necessary to support the team, just head over to the Greene Turtle and enjoy some food and drinks at a table, in the bar or even take-out.

So far, more than 200 students have committed to taking the plunge, South River SGA advisor and Snohawks team captain Doug Brown said in a letter to the community.

“Our team members have been working very hard to raise funds to gain awareness for Special Olympics,” Brown wrote. “The cold that we will feel is temporary while the positive impact this event will have on the lives of thousands of citizens with intellectual disabilities will last a lifetime.”

According to the Snohawks’s official Polar Bear Plunge page, the group set an initial goal of $20,000 and has already raised more than $15,000.

If the Greene Turtle isn’t on your list of favorite places, you can still support the team by ordering from South River Subs and Pizza. Ten percent of your order will go to the Snohawks if you present the corresponding flyer (see PDF).

Community members can send a donation directly to the team or to a specific team member by visiting the Snohawks's website.

Those hoping to support the team can also try the brand new “stuffed burgers” and “stuffed beers” at the local Greene Turtle, one of only a few locations in the area to offer the recently-unveiled treats.
