POLL: Top 5 Suggestions to Replace Old Giant

Vote for what you think should fill the vacant grocery mart on Solomons Island Road.

Last week, I asked the Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch community what should replace the Giant’s old location on Solomons Island Road, and you guys didn’t disappoint.

Sign up to get Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch headlines sent directly to your inbox every morning. All local. All the time.

More than 58 comments quickly filled the page, providing almost 20 different suggestions for what you’d like to see fill the vacant business space. As part of Patch’s new feature, Vision for Vacancies, I wanted to collect the most popular suggestions and allow you, the reader, to vote on your favorite recommendation.

Of all the suggestions, fifteen different users said they want to see a YMCA or indoor youth complex come to Edgewater. One commenter, TM, went further and said the community “desperately needs” en establishment of this nature.

The other most popular suggestion were for Trader Joe’s, an ice-skating rink, a bowling alley and a Lowes.

Only one user said they wanted a Walmart, but that comment was immediately met by another user who, and I quote, “NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO…”

I only included the top five suggestions, but always fell free to speak your mind in the comments if what you want isn’t listed in the poll.

So again, the question is, what do you want to replace this vacant business space?

Vote in the poll and tell me in the comments.

Has anyone been in touch with the land owners, to see what they want to do with the property? I would love to know their thoughts.

A YMCA or other youth community center would be great. Not another grocery store.

The YMCA is sitting on over 200 acres at Camp Letts now.
In their off days, they might be able to start something akin to a Community Center.
They have enough buildings, a cafeteria and a BIG pool there now.
They can always use the money.
Need to Change Management Philosophy...

A BYOB skating rink? Sounds like injuries waiting to happen!

I've wanted to put a laser tag arena and arcade in there. But I lack funding and business know how.

400 job losses at the giant food/c&s dry food warehouse in jessup, they should use the space for a giant food graveyard where everyone can ride by and remember when giant food use to be something.

This definitely needs to be a community center of some sort. It is very worth doing for our community!

I think we can safely leave the B in BYOB out of any ideas for this spot - there is already too much B in Edgewater....

I think a rec / community center would be great. A good place for kids to have a place to go and have fun while safe. A place for kids to help other kids.

A Home store would be cool (it's like a Marshalls or TJ Maxx.)
I would like to see a flea market at the old lumber place on 214, just past Sue's Deli.

No more restaurants for sure, enough is enough. A community center for sure with a flea market or a mega garage sale every saturday and sunday and a place for education for the local kids the rest of the time they need it.
About the old lumber place on 214, a leisure center is a must over there with an olympic pool a mini golf and other activities and why not a bed and breakfast too.

Well, Since "None of the above" was not an option, I voted for Lowes. BUT, what I'd really like to see in this whole area, (not just the old Giant) is a moratoriam on ANY kind of business that draws the yuppie crowd. Since the South River Colony Development hit here, this area is a mess. I'd like to see a few places like that "Speed School" (whatever that is) replaced by something useful....... The Beemer and Lexus crowd needs to head up to Annapolis and let "The Beach" get back to the comfortable, friendly, down home, Blue Collar place that it used to be.....

A community pool!! Idk if this is a good place to have it, but I think Edgewater needs a nice, big, community pool. That's the only thing I miss about Bowie.
