Hundreds Attend Woodland Beach VFD Fundraising Concert
There were plenty of things for the whole family at this year’s event that helped raise thousands of dollars for department.
Over 700 hundred people showed up for the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department’s second annual fundraising concert. The event was held to help the department raise money for a new station house and those who attended helped support their local fire department by raising thousands of dollars for the cause.
Bayside Inn, hosted the concert in Edgewater last Saturday. The event kicked off at noon and ran until after midnight. There was plenty of good music, tasty crabs and early in the day, lots for the kids to do.
The children’s activities included a Sponge-Bob Squarepants moonbounce provided by Tiffany’s Moonbounce of Edgewater. There was also face painting, snocones and a special appearance by Louie the Bowie Baysox mascot.
Later in the afternoon the music started with a performance from MC Blues Band. Four other bands took the stage including, Whyte Beard, Past Tense and Crosstie Walker featuring former D.C. shockjock ‘The Greaseman.’ Performances continued into the evening and concluded early Sunday morning just after midnight with a performance by Bayside Soul.
There were also 50/50 raffles and a silent auction with items donated from local businesses like a $500 gift card from Diamond Jewelers of Annapolis, a remote car start installation from Trick Trucks and a gas grill from Home Depot.
In addition to music and games there were cold drinks and crabs available at the Bayside Inn bar throughout the event.
Paul Carlow, owner of Bayside Inn has been in the community since 1971 and hosted the first event last year. He said hosting the event again this year was the least he could do to help out those who keep us safe.
“This fire department has been one of the mainstays of this area for a long time. They’re volunteers so why not?,” he said.
Carlow has been helping plan the event for months and had sold about 500 tickets by the morning of the event. “We want to give them as much support as we can,” he said. “All of the money from the ticket sales goes directly to the fire department.”
Those attending the event were asked to make a $10 donation and Carlow said helping out the volunteer fire fighter force is important to everyone and he has been working to drum up support for them from the community, even if they do not attend the event this year.
“I’m trying to get as many people in this community to make that donation, whether they come or not,” he said. “$10 is nothing if your house catches on fire.”
A lot of local businesses decided to help out this year said Woodland Beach VFD Lieutenant John Sweeney. In addition to the donations for the raffle and silent auction, Taylor and Son’s Inc. of Annapolis supplied the generator that powered the stage which was provided by Whyte Beard Productions. According to Sweeney, the final ticket sale count was 709 making the total amount of money donated just over $7,000.
